Many moms have a good story about the day their baby was born, but not many have as good a child birth story as Norristown's Rachel Fecho – and it wasn't even her baby.

Fecho, a branch manager for the Conshohocken Free Library, had left work around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, after her father called to say he and Fecho's young son were in the emergency room. The younger Fecho had dropped a railroad tie on his foot and his grandfather didn't like the look of the swelling. 

Fecho says she got to Montgomery Hospital at around 1:30 p.m. and was making her way to the emergency room entrance when she was thrust into what sounds like a scene from an action movie.

"As I was walking into the front door of the emergency room, a car pulls up and the driver gets out and goes running inside," said Fecho. "I could see three other people in the car – a young girl, maybe eight or nine, and another woman in the back seat leaning over the front seat – and they were all crying."

Fecho approached the three hysterical passengers and asked if they needed help.

"Yeah, hold the baby's head!" Fecho remembers one of the women saying.

"I ran around to the other side of the car and put my hands out and then the baby came out in my hands," Fecho said, laughing.

As Good a Samaritan as Fecho obviously was, she insists she didn't have to do much in the situation.

"It really wasn't delivering, because it was on its way," said Fecho. "I really just caught it."

Fecho held the baby for a few moments, presenting her to the crying new mom so she could see the newborn baby girl was opening her eyes and moving her hands. It wasn't long before hospital staff was on the scene and took over.

Fecho handed the newborn to the first nurse to arrive and made her way into the emergency room to check on her own child. She never even learned the name of the woman whose child she helped deliver.

"I just want to know if she's OK," said Fecho in an interview with Norristown Patch. "It's not the best condition to have a baby in. I just want to know she's OK."

Officials at Montgomery Hospital have confirmed that the new mom and her baby girl are fine and resting comfortably in the maternity ward, but they aren't interested in talking to the media just yet about their adventure in child birth.

Fecho, meanwhile, reports that her young son broke two bones in his foot as a result of his railroad tie mishap.

"He's alright," Fecho assured. "He's going to be off it for the whole summer, so he's pretty bummed."

"When I went in to see my son, he had the little heart rate monitor on his finger and I said 'Let me see that,'" recounts Fecho. "I put it on my finger and it shot up to like 120-something and it was still going up!"

Fecho has managed to calm down, but definitely relishes having such a great story to tell.

"It was quite a day," she said.
