Plant One Million Campaign Comes to Norristown

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is partnering with community groups and volunteers in Norristown and other Montco communities to replenish area tree populations.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) will coordinate the planting of 175 bare-root trees in Montgomery County this Saturday, April 9, as part of a new regional initiative, Plant One Million.

According to a release issued by the PHS, the trees will be planted with the help of PHS Tree Tenders and other volunteer and municipal groups in Abington, Ambler, East Norriton, Lower Merion, Lower Moreland, Norristown and Upper Dublin.

PHS and its partners are launching Plant One Million, the nation’s largest multi-state tree campaign, to replenish the tree population of 13 counties in the Greater Philadelphia region, southern New Jersey and Delaware.

The region has lost millions of trees in recent decades to development. Many of the older communities are also losing the “ancient” trees that were planted many generations ago.

The new initiative will involve local governments, corporate sponsors, organizations, schools, civic groups and residents in reaching the goal of a 30-percent tree canopy—the area of land shaded by trees.

“Trees are vital to the environmental and economic well-being of the region, and this program will have a major impact on the health of our communities,” said PHS President Drew Becher.

The Plant One Million campaign will educate and mobilize volunteers throughout the region to “plant, count and tend” trees. Find contact information for sites that are looking for planting volunteers on April 9 and beyond here.
