The values and the vision for this country are reasons why President Obama is running for second term.

More than 1,500 people were fired up on Thursday to see First Lady Michelle Obama at the Upper Dublin High School gymnasium.

Dan Siegel, the Montgomery County regional field director for Obama's re-election campaign, told the audience that in 2009, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. He said they were lucky to have full health insurance to cover to costs of her medical expenses. However, he added that the Affordable Care Act, passed by President Obama, means his mother's illness will never be considered a pre-existing condition and cannot be grounds for denial of health coverage.

Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro said he and his wife spent time at the White House and were surprised by how much the President and First Lady are like “one of us.”

“The First Lady gets it – the real challenges of our families," Shapiro said. “They have done so much for us."

“The president and the First Lady aren’t done working for you,” Shapiro continued. “I’m working as hard as I can to make it eight [years]... It’s up to us and up to you to make the difference."

Julie Haywood, a local resident, welcomed the First Lady to Upper Dublin High School. Haywood said after helping on the 2008 campaign, she felt compelled to get more involved in her community, so she ran for school board in Cheltenham, where she lives.

“I stand with Obama because he stands with working mothers like me,” said Haywood.

She said she believes "Our economy should work for everyone," and with that, she introduced First Lady Michelle Obama.

Obama began by thanking those volunteers who have helped move the campaign forward. She said that during the last campaign, grassroots campaigning was what won the election, and she told the crowd that “we’re going to do it again."

Obama said her husband is running for a second term “because of our values…the values we believe in…[and] the vision for this country that we believe in.”

The First Lady also said her husband “knows what it means when your family struggles,” because both Obama and her husband grew up in middle class families. She added that the stories that her husband has heard along the campaign trail and during the last three and a half years have kept him going.

“He stood up for our most fundamental rights again and again and again,” said Obama. “All of that’s at stake and so much more... The chance to finish what we’ve started."

As the speech drew to a close, the First Lady drove home that elections are about the world we want to leave for our children.

“We can’t turn back now, we’ve come so far.”

FOWARD! COMRADS! Did this dan seigel character actually say his mom had cancer(pause for effect), and that she had coverage despite no obama meddling. Wow! The first lady gets it? Probably why she takes trips around the world on our dime. Probably why her kids go to a private rather than public school. I know im supposed to say how glamorous she is, but she has the shape of grimace(mcdonalds anyone). Really the most frightening fact is that no matter who wins, the middle class is still screwed.

Please explain which first ladies in history traveled without the taxpayer's dime. It's ok, I'll wait. . . . oh, that's right, ALL OF THEM! They are expected to represent our country, make speeches and appearances, etc. It's part of their "job". And as far as the girls' schooling, there are security issues involving the children of any President or high official that would be very difficult to accommodate in a public school. That's why every President with school age children, except Jimmy Carter, has sent their children to private school.

Marxism at it's finest. Love how the sheep get right in line and eat this nonsense up from the dictators wife. We deserve everything that's happening to us right now in this country. We might as well rip up the Constitution, cause we clearly don't follow that anymore. I hope the Kenyan wins and buries this country even further, cause we have not learned our lessons yet. As a Veteran of this country, I'm ashamed at those who voted for this Marxist cause he's an enemy to the Untied States Constitution.

Hi Greg. You won't get an answer, because the person who posted clearly doesn't know what the word "marxist" means. Mr. Obama isn't a socialist, a marxist, a communist or a dictator. People hear these words coming from the likes of noted scholar Rush Limbaugh or parroted by the blow dried anchors on Fox News without any comprehension of what the words actually MEAN. You know, the definitions which explain different political philosophies. In the right wing universe, it doesn't have to be TRUE to be BELIEVED

Babs Ann, ok, if you don't like the President, fine. That's your right. But at least be honest. You consider having your father abandon you, a mother on welfare at times, living with your grandparents, moving overseas with a stepfather etc to be NOT a "struggle"? Obama wasn't born the son of a millionaire auto executive (Romney), nor the son of a congressman/CIA director/President and grandson of a US Senator (GW Bush). And your paranoid ranting of socialist hell holes is amusing and very sad, at the same time.

And if a biracial boy whose parents abandoned him can make it in the USA, doesn't that say something about the promise of America? The same America that Michelle Obama wasn't proud of until her husband was elected President?

If you know his biography that well, then you must know how inaccurate your comment was. Since his mother was unable to pay for such schools, another struggle--which Mrs. Obama referenced at her speech--involved heavy student loan debt. She shared with the audience that at one point in their married life their combined student loan monthly payment was higher than their mortgage. Sounds like a "struggle" for a young couple trying to establish themselves.

What you have written might be accurate, however, some people look at that past and see where Obama would be out to take down capitalism. However, he has used capitalism to his advantage and he shall never be "poor" again, while the solid middle class Americans' comfort is in real jeopardy. Have you ever asked yourself what those (Republican and Democrat alike) on capital hill are giving up. The answer is "NOTHING." They do not contribute to social security, they sure use every loop hole there is in the system to keep everything they earn (and sometimes steal) and they get almost everything for nothing. That's where the fight should be taken. Get out and vote them all out. Start anew. If the voters would do that, then our leaders would not get so comfortable. They might actually have to consider job security a real threat.

If traveling is part of her job, how does she end up on overseas vacations. Is it part of her job to be out campaigning for her husband? Do the taxpayers of upper dublin recieve compensation for use of school, police, and other services for clearly political purposes? Obama is a marxist. His economic philosophy is that we are all divided into classes. Those classes have been held down by dominate forces. In his mind he wants "fairness." That means taking from one group and giving to another group. Why is there hostility to rich people? Shouldnt we all be aspiring to be rich one day? If romneys and bushes are successful they should lead. What did obama do? He had loser parents, smoked alot of weed, and was a comm organizer(whatever that means.) This country deserves what it gets for hiring such a bum.

So much for that idea.

The first lady is back on the hustings with gusto, deploying her sky-high popularity, practiced smile and firm defense of President Bush's agenda for Republicans nationwide. GOP strategists say sending Mrs. Bush out to help candidates running in the midterm elections is a no-brainer.

This article is lacking the enumeration of the "values" that Michelle was talking about. I see a lot of ellipses. Would those be the values of life, liberty, and property? Or perhaps social values like hard work, faith and family? Or perhaps they're the values of the activist, who wants government control of industry and a "right" to a job, a "right" to a house, and a "right" to silence dissent?

I am 65 and worked before marriage, after marriage for a few years, had children and went back to work when my oldest was 16. During that time, I lived the economy...and know when we were feeling either comfortable having to budget wisely or really feeling the pinch and having to really tightening up on my budget. All the while my husband was making a comfortable living and we truly lived within our means. Early 80's was the best period of comfort even though it was a time of large, constant expenditures for us. So, I was just wondering if you have been supporting yourself, yourself and a family and if you have lived those experiences as a mature adult who had people other than yourself depending on you. It seems to me that most die hard liberals are younger and have relatively little varied life experiences to have such strong and forceful convictions with regard to something as important as "serving" the American people.

To further the question one has to ask is this economic situation planned. Is the spending spree to cripple. Destroy the middle class. Tax the middle to rich more, to put more people into poverty. Sounds like Cloward–Piven strategy. Please research https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloward%E2%80%93Piven_strategy. "that a welfare enrollment drive would strain local budgets, precipitating a crisis at the state and local levels that would be a wake-up call for the federal government, particularly the Democratic Party, thus forcing it to implement a national solution to poverty. Cloward and Piven wrote that “the ultimate objective of this strategy [would be] to wipe out poverty by establishing a guaranteed annual income...”[2] There would also be side consequences of this strategy, according to Cloward and Piven. These would include: easing the plight of the poor in the short-term (through their participation in the welfare system); shoring up support for the national Democratic Party then-splintered by pluralist interests (through its cultivation of poor and minority constituencies by implementing a national solution to poverty); and relieving local governments of the financially and politically onerous burdens of public welfare (through a national solution to poverty).

I find the cries about Obama being a socialist rather sophomoric and merely a rehash of the McCain campaign talking points that people have held onto for the past four years. This is the main problem I have with the left-right paradigm. Each side tends to attack with talking points that are absolutely meaningless in evaluating the performance of Obama and any other politician for that matter. This actually robs the country as the debate can’t get past angry statements so it can’t move to a rational discussion. I’m come to believe that’s a design feature of our contemporary political system and there’s an increasing number of people who are rejecting the two party system as a result. I count myself among them.

The problem with talking points and angry accusations is that they prevent a rational analysis of policies and I believe that if one were to examine Obama’s economic and foreign policies, one wouldn’t see a liberal at all. On the foreign policy front, Obama has basically been a continuation of Bush and has expanded the Bush policies of the expansion of the security state and foreign incursions abroad. Obama has greatly expand targeted assassination through drone warfare while killing many innocents, has provided covert and overt aid in the overthrow of governments on Libya and Syria and has overseen the implementation of the National Defense Authorization Act which provides for indefinite detention of American Citizens.

On the economic front, he’s overseen the continued bailout of the banks and has done nothing, absolutely nothing, to put some of the folks in jail who created this financial mess we’re in.

All of this is totally absent from the political debate and these are very real issues rather than Obama’s supposed socialism and leftist policies. Those on the right would have a legitimate criticism of the president if they were to go after him here, but they fall silent. Those on the left could push this president away from these dangerous policies, but they fall silent too. In effect, there’s a tacit agreement between both left and right about what they’re going to discuss and what they’re not. The real issues are simply not going to be discussed and we will go through the entire presidential campaign with gaffes on both sides and Romney’s taxes being the only issues discussed. And the result that will be the public going once again into the voting booth with little to vote on other than how they “feel”. Facts and analysis are beside the point. This is by design.

BTW, I’m a man of the left and I have major issues with Obama.

One can legitimately criticize a number of the things the administration has done, but being Marxist is not one of them. If you accused him of being a fascist, that might ring truer and he would be the most recent example of a bi-partisan long line of them. Generally, I find mere name calling---on either side----is the greatest problem we have in the country as it presents a barrier to seeing things as they are. The so called political divide is a funded diversion to keep folks from seeing the real deal. Outside of window dressing, there's little difference between the parties.

Bingo.

This clown radical surrounds himself with other amateurs, radicals, and "academics" who never held a real job in their lives, and they're making decisions on the economy?

Unemployment went through the roof after this clown started implementing his European-socialist wealth redistribution policies. They tanked the housing market and people lost their homes - the single biggest investment anyone ever makes.

He doesn't deserve a second term. We hire a manager to manage the country, the economy, and the security of the country. He's in way over his head, and he needs to be fired, downsized, laid-off, or whatever euphemism is in use today.

And if it's NOT just incompetence, then what else is it? Deliberate? One wonders.

We should be discussing what the landscape will look like when the United States of America is dismantled, just as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was taken apart. In case you haven't realized it, America is a failed experiment, and it has already died. The America that conservatives speak of has been gone for decades. The America that liberals speak of has proven to be unsustainable, as witnessed by the USSR, Greece, Italy, England, and our own history over the past 50+ years.
Look at the facts... we cannot win military campaigns anymore, we cannot create or sustain our own economy, we can't maintain our own infrastructure, and we can't properly educate our children. What "hope" would anyone have for a nation that can't do anything to help itself?
The true "vision" of America is one where, in the future, many countries will occupy the land that was once the US of A. You should be packing your "values" in preparation of moving to the emerging country that best represents your beliefs.
The question we should be asking ourselves is, how do we get there? Peacefully? or by way of war, as these things have been accomplished throughout history?

And this is the real issue. The partisan divide is a fiction created to divert attention from this issue. The economy of state of California is something like 20% of US GDP IIRCC and it's having all sorts of issues along with other states. Its problem is the same as many other states and the government--debt. Do you really think the US can remain economically viable if CA or NY goes down the tubes? Can Europe survive without Spain? Why did the USSR breakup? In the latter case, the empire could not be sustained and they simply met the scrap heap if history before we did. Our problems can not be summed up as merely a liberal vs conservative philosophy because for all practical purposes there's no difference. The leadership has failed us, because we as people have failed by not paying attention. There's way too much talk about socialism and tax returns and none about the real issues the nation faces, but that's by design. The partisan battles have been created to prevent that very discussion. It's a little like a WWF match with the combatants and the referees laughing it up and counting the money after the show.
