Weis Markets to Buy East Norriton Genuardi's
The Pa.-based supermarket company will purchase three area Genuardi's locations from parent company Safeway.
According to a release issued by Weis Markets, the Pennsylvania-based supermarket chain has entered into an agreement to buy three area Genuardi's locations from current owner, Safeway, Inc., including the one at 25 West Germantown Pike in East Norriton.
The East Norriton location and the two others being purchased by Weiss in Conshohocken and Doylestown are three of the remaining 14 locations still owned by Safeway after a sale of 16 stores to Giant earlier in the year.
"We're extremely pleased to be adding these stores to our store base," said Weis Markets' President and CEO David J. Hepfinger in the release. "We look forward to serving these communities as the lead local merchant as we have in 33 counties throughout Central, Eastern and Northeastern Pennsylvania. We will also be reaching out to the associates of these stores to discuss employment with our company."
Weis currently operates 161 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.
The Jeffersonville Genuardi's location on West Main Street is scheduled to close March 10.

Good move for Weis, they will get alot of customers looking for a pleasant family owned market to shop at. With the Genuardi Family and Clemens family both out of the super market business , it will be refreshing and exciting to see what Weis has to offer

I've never shopped at a Weis. I'm curious to see what they bring to the area.

Weis markets are cool places to shop. They reach out to their customer base. Their fuel perks program adds extra value to the shopping experience. Their private labels are of the highest quality and offer great value. What's not to like about the Weis shopping experience.

Looking forward to seeing what Weis does. I used to love the Genuardi's but when Safeway took over they never recovered. Long lines, empty produce bins and fewer selections just as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's were ramping up. Shame on Safeway for trashing a local gem.

I shop at Weis in lansdale and it's a terrific store. They had a major overhaul in the last few months and their selections are great. The people who work there are very nice and their bakery has some beautiful pastries and cakes. I am so glad they are taking over genuardis.

Luray, I overheard a Genuardi's employee saying sometime in the next month or so. I'll make some calls and see if I can get a date.
