Five of the Norristown Area High School Golden Eagle wrestlers took part in the Southeast Regional wrestling tournament this past weekend, March 1-2, 2013.  To qualify for the region tournament, wrestlers had to place in the top three at one of the three District tournaments last weekend. 43 teams were represented at the Region tournament. Of those, Norristown was the only team to have more than one champion and is the only team to have qualified four wrestlers for the PIAA state tournament.

Norristown was the team champion with 78.5 team points. Justin Staudenmayer of Plymouth-Whitemarsh earned the Outstanding Wrestler award.

Zach Fuentes, Mikey Springer and Brett Harner were champions in their respective weight classes. Rashon Lusane was runner-up, and Shaheed Hill did not place.

Zach Fuentes won the title at 113 lbs. To get to the finals, Zach beat Phil Torresani of Hatboro-Horsham (9-6) and Dan Martoccio of Council Rock South (2-1). In the championship bout Zach beat Scott Parker of Pennridge with a sudden victory overtime takedown to win 3-1.

At 145 lbs, Mikey Springer defeated Jon Cooper of Springford by 16-1 tech fall and John Dambro of Garnet Valley (2-1) en route to the finals. In the championship bout, Springer squeaked by Ryan O’Connor of Neshaminy with a 5-3 decision.

Rashon Lusane continued to surprise the region, making it to the finals with a 5-1 decision over Nate Russel of Neshaminy and a 3-2 decision over Gregg Harvey of Boyertown. Lusane was taken down by Nick Giangiulio (Perkiomen Valley) in overtime of the championship match, to lose 4-2.

Brett Harner continued to dominate the 182 lb class by pinning his way to the finals. In the finals, Harner soundly defeated Gordon Bolig of Owen J Roberts by major decision (11-0).

The top three place-winners in each weight will compete in the PIAA state wrestling championships in Hershey, PA from March 7 – 9, 2013.

Fuentes, Springer, Lusane and Harner all qualified for the state tournament.

Fuentes will first face Sophmore Todd Hetrick of Northampton who is 26-13.

Springer will see Senior Matt Hammerstone of Crestwood, with a record of 32-6.

Lusane draws state champion Garret Hammond of Chambersburg, who is 43-6.

Harner will square off against Senior Martin Strenk of Delaware Valley with a record of 35-8.
