Nuclear Officials Knew Of Faults Upon Licensing Plant

Three faults were documented when the Limerick nuclear plant was planned over 30 years ago.

Local residents last month questioned whether the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission knew of local faults when the Limerick power plant was planned for construction.  "The short answer is, 'yes,'" said Diane Screnci, NRC senior public affairs officer.  Folks at a meeting in Limerick Township last month showed NRC officials a document which referred to "the Sanatoga fault" and asked whether the NRC was aware of its proximity to the Limerick site prior to initial licensing.  The NRC hosted the meeting – which included workers from the commission and Exelon – to discuss with the public an annual safety performance assessment of Exelon's Limerick nuclear power plant.  At that time, members of The Alliance For A Clean Environment brought copies…

Elmwood Park Zoo Names Albert Zone as New Executive Director

Zone has been acting executive director since February.

According to a release from Elmwood Park Zoo, the zoo's board of directors unanimously chose local entrepreneur and current acting executive director, Albert J. Zone, to fill the role permanently. Zone, 33, is a Norristown native who first became familiar with zoo as a child. He has since become a passionate volunteer, supplier to and employee of the 88-year old institution last summer. He was selected to lead its 58-person staff following a national search chaired by Marilyn Tinari, head of the Middle School for Girls at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. “I’ve loved the zoo from the time I was a little kid, and to have the opportunity now to play so key a role in guiding it through this challenging economic time and into the future, is …

Some Facts About the New Einstein Medical Center in New East Norriton

The Einstein Healthcare System is celebrating their new hospital with a countdown of fun facts leading up to the opening in September.

The folks at Einstein Healthcare Network are getting pretty excited about the Einstein Medical Center Montgomery slated to open in September. To celebrate, they've been running a daily countdown to the opening date with a fun fact about the facility each day. They've been posting them daily on their Twitter  and Facebook pages and compiling the full list on their website. Some of the more interesting ones: Fact #143 – Every patient room at Einstein Montgomery is private. Fact #138 – 2,800 golf balls were found when the new hospital’s construction site, a former golf course, was excavated – along with 5 golf clubs. I guess Einstein got a lot more than they thought they would when they bought Wood's Golf Center. Maybe someone should have let…

Walmart and Toys 'R Us Recall Inflatable Slides After Reported Death

Roughly 21,000 inflatable slides will be recalled from Walmart and Toys 'R Us stores due to the death of a woman as well as reports of severe neck injuries.

From the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Walmart and Toys 'R' Us are announcing the recall of about 21,000 inflatable Banzai in-ground pool water slides. During use, the slide can deflate, allowing the user to hit the ground underneath the slide and become injured. The slide is also unstable and can topple over in both still and windy conditions and carries inadequate warnings and instructions. The CPSC is aware that a 29-year-old Colorado mother died in Andover, Mass. after fracturing her neck going down a Banzai in-ground pool water slide which had been placed over the concrete edge of a pool. The victim hit her head at the bottom of the slide because it had…

Chap's Taproom Has the Happiest Hour!

We asked and you answered – Chap's Taproom is tops for its happy hour.

We resurrected our Readers' Choice contest this week to find our area's best happy hour and though the voting was a bit tepid, Chap's Taproom was the most beloved by far. Norristown Patch reader Jim Petrosky had this to say in his endorsement: "Another vote for Chap's. Anyone voting for another bar/restaurant, needs to visit Chap's once to become a believer. Currently seven days a week with great drink, beer and food specials. As far as beer is concerned, not only do they have the usual domestic and imports, but they have a great selection of craft beers on tap as well. My personal faves! Yup, Chap's is a no brainer." We'll be stopping by Chap's Taproom soon to present them with a certificate for the awesome powers of happy hour-tude. (We …

Pa Lottery Looking for Local Quinto Winner

Someone who bought a Quinto ticket in East Norriton for the May 21, 2011 mid-day drawing is sitting on a ticket worth $50,000.

A media release issued by the Pennsylvania Lottery says the commission is looking for winning ticket holder in our area who has yet to claim their winnings. And time is running out. According to the lottery commission, the winning Quinto ticket matched all five numbers in the order they were drawn (1-1-2-9-3) for a top prize of $50,000, less federal withholding. It was sold at Smokings, 2894 DeKalb Pike in East Norriton, on May 21, 2011. The ticket and prize will expire one year from the dates of the drawings. That means the ticket holder has 11 days left to claim their winnings. "We don't want these two winners to miss out on their prizes," said Lottery Executive Director Todd Rucci. "We encourage our players in Montgomery and Beaver …

More Internet Love for Lou's

A culinary blog recently name checked Lou's Sandwich Shop as Norristown's zep expert.

Lou's Sandwich Shop has gotten a lot of love from us here at Norristown Patch in the last year. They won out over Eve's in our tuna zep showdown and they took top honors in our Patch Poll for best coffee. They even got props from Philadelphia artist Matthew Bush for giving him a crash course in Norristown to prepare him for creating the mural planned for the corner of Lafayette and DeKalb Street. "Of particular help was an afternoon visit to Lou's where I had my first zep (NOT my last)," said Bush in an email interview with Patch. "[I] spoke with a few older lifelong residents. Everybody with whom I spoke was very helpful, but also offered different views on the changes that have occurred in Norristown and different brands of optimism for …

Where do you go when you need to unwind and toss back a few?

After a short vacation and a bit of retooling, our Readers' Choice contest is back with new rules and a new topic. This week we're looking for our area's best Happy Hour and this time, it's personal – we actually need to find a happy hour spot of our own, so we're hoping to get some ideas. Where does everybody know your name? No unreliable poll to deal with this time – just vote for your favorite by giving them a shout out in the comments below. Did we not name check your favorite spot? Just tell us below. You have until 9 a.m. Friday to vote for your favorite. We'll add …
