Walkers Brave Winter Weather to 'Take Back the Streets'

Over 20 residents and supporters walked the streets of Norristown on Saturday in a show of solidarity against recent violence in the community.

Supporters from as far away as Chester, a community with its own problems with violence, joined Norristown residents, council members and members of groups associated with Norristown Clubs United on Saturday afternoon to walk the streets in an effort to show solidarity and to express their outrage at the recent violence and loss of young lives in the community.

More than 20 people braved the snowy conditions and wound their way through most of the West End, starting at Marshall and Buttonwood streets – the scene of a shoot out just a few days before Christmas. The group visited several spots that have been witness to violence.

"We're here to show strength and unity," said walker Sean Tuggle. "To take the streets back."

Also joining the group was Tracy Brown, aunt of Paul Brown, the 24-year-old who was gunned down on Christmas night in Norristown.

"Christmas day devastated us," said Brown. Brown told the group she hopes the loss suffered by her family can be turned into something that makes a difference for Norristown.

"I want to turn it into something positive," she said. "I want to take these streets back."

Apparently after reading many comments the last week or two we are not allowed to "point fingers" any more because it is not nice and it might get to the core of a problem rather than skirt the issue. Shhhh! We don't want anyone to know Norristown is a dysfunctional mess. Maybe we can build a movie theater next if we provide enough free stuff and county money to the owners. If we can give 15 more people jobs for $8.50 an hour they won't sell drugs or shoot anyone anymore.

jxjipper:It appears your purpose is to incite and excite rather than get to the core of the problems. But what the heck, this is public forum. You go and point all you want. Maybe YOU are a dysfunctional mess, or just bored out of you little mind. Say what you want as only those that are like you will get off on your comments. Some of us are like, "Oh there he goes again, he and John Q. Public are a mess, dysfunctional, thrill seeking, messes."
