Walkers Brave Winter Weather to 'Take Back the Streets'

Supporters from as far away as Chester, a community with its own problems with violence, joined Norristown residents, council members and members of groups associated with Norristown Clubs United on Saturday afternoon to walk the streets in an effort to show solidarity and to express their outrage at the recent violence and loss of young lives in the community.

More than 20 people braved the snowy conditions and wound their way through most of the West End, starting at Marshall and Buttonwood streets – the scene of a shoot out just a few days before Christmas. The group visited several spots that have been witness to violence. 

"We're here to show strength and unity," said walker Sean Tuggle. "To take the streets back."

Also joining the group was Tracy Brown, aunt of Paul Brown, the 24-year-old who was gunned down on Christmas night in Norristown.

"Christmas day devastated us," said Brown. Brown told the group she hopes the loss suffered by her family can be turned into something that makes a difference for Norristown. 

"I want to turn it into something positive," she said. "I want to take these streets back."
