Remembering Local Casualties of the Iraq War

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq, Norristown Patch honors two local heroes lost.

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War, which began the evening of March 19, 2003. By one count, the war is directly responsible for at least 189,000 deaths

CNN has created a dynamic interactive map of all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

According to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, including many from Pennsylvania. Among them are two men from neighboring Bridgeport.

  • Cpl. John Harrison Todd III, 24, was one of three Marines killed when a roadside bomb exploded as their Humvee passed by the device in Baghdad on June 29, 2004.
  • Sgt. 1st Class Paul Daniel Karpowich, 30, was killed when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive inside the mess hall at Camp Marez in Mosul, Iraq, on Dec. 21, 2004.
