Norristown wrestlers take 2nd place at District 1 Central Tournament

Norristown Area High School's wrestling team participated in the District 1 Central tournament on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Norristown qualified 9 wrestlers for the tournament. Of those, five placed in the top three.

Mikey Springer won the championship at 145 lbs. Springer used two 1st period falls to make his way to the finals. Springer had a rematch with Sophmore Dom DeLaurentis of Upper Moreland, whom he faced a week ago in the finals of the SOL-American league championship. Springer won by decision with a score of 7-1.

One of the biggest surprises of the tournament came at 152 lbs, where Norristown freshman Rashon Lusane wrestled out of the pigtails to win the championship. To get to the finals, Rashon pinned Tyler Crossman of Unionville (1:59) and had decisions over Alex Wait of Downingtown East (3-1) and a rematch with Wissahickon's Dan Scheuren (3-2), who beat Rashon in last week's league championships. Rashon defeated Avon Grove Junior Caleb Edwards by 7-4 decision to win the title.

Nationally ranked Senior Brett Harner cruised to the finals at 182 lbs with two 1st period falls of 0:09 and 0:56. Harner also had a rematch with his SOL-American league championship foe, Senior Sam Jacobson of Upper Dublin. Harner wasn't able to pin Jacobson, but put on a takedown clinic en route to a 21-9 major decision.

The other big surprise of the tournament was Shaheed Hill, who made also made it to the finals, before finally losing a match. Hill earner his way to the finals via 9-1 major over Will Hart of Unionville followed by a 3-2 win over Dean Lang of Great Valley. Hill dropped the 3-0 decision in the finals to Sean Snodgrass of Downingtown East.

Senior Rasheed Lusane made it to the consolation finals to wrestle for third place, however wasnt able to overcome the size disadvantage, and lost a close 4-1 decision to Cory Tomasetti of Kennet. Only the first 3-place winners advance to the Southeast Region Tournament next weekend, so this was a tough loss for Rasheed. Rasheed finished his high school wrestling career with a record of 41 - 21, a 0.661 winning percentage.

Senior Nick Soldano (138 lbs), Junior Darrin May (160 lbs) and Soph Isaiah Samuels (195 lbs) also made the trip but didn't place.
