"On behalf of our organization’s staff, board members, volunteers, and most importantly, on behalf of victims of domestic violence, we are relieved by the recent news that parole was denied for Rafael Robb," stated Beth Sturman, Executive Director of Laurel House, which is a domestic violence agency located in Norristown.
Robb was sentenced in 2008 to serve five to ten years for the brutal murder of his wife, Ellen Robb. After learning that Mr. Robb was granted early release by the State Parole Board, Ellen’s family lead efforts to advocate against his early release.
"We feel fortunate to live in a community where our elected officials are so committed to seeking justice for victims of domestic violence and we want to especially thank Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, State Representative Mike Vereb, State Representative Todd Stephens and, and Commissioner Bruce Castor for their tireless efforts to ensure the justice and safety of our community," stated Sturman. "In addition to the direct danger which I believe Mr. Robb’s release would have posed to the community, his release at this stage of his sentence would have sent a very frightening message to domestic violence victims everywhere."
According to Sturman, victims of domestic violence are often scared and traumatized. Many of the victims remain with their abuser because they are afraid of leaving and dealing with the possible repercussions.
"Choosing to leave an abusive relationship is one of the most frightening decisions a victim has to make. We cannot stress enough how important it is for these individuals to have community resources and a strong support system to turn to," explained Sturman. "We are proud to say that in working with the local and surrounding communities, we have helped people understand what domestic violence is and encouraged them to take a stand and say 'not in my neighborhood.'"
