Ever since Chik-fil-A President Dan Cathy proclaimed that the fast-food chain is supportive of the biblical definition of marriage, social networks across the web have been awash in arguments from both sides of the debate.
Now, a local voice has chimed in on the matter, as Domenick Scudera, a theater professor at Ursinus College, has firmly stated his opposition to the chain in a recent update to his blog on the Huffington Post.
"I ate at a Chick-fil-A restaurant the other day and my life was transformed," said Scudera, in a post dated July 19. "You see, at Chick-fil-A you get so much more than mouthwatering, delicious fast food. In addition to chicken, biscuits and fries, you also get a whopping helping of evangelism."
Near the beginning of the post, Scudera takes aim at the company's mission statement, which states their goal is to be "America's Best quick-service restaurant."
"There is nothing more effective for quick service than evangelism," said Scudera, via his Huffington Post blog. "The next time I order myself up a spicy chicken sandwich deluxe and those yummy waffle potato fries, I hope my server will share some biblical wisdom with me. I'll have a side order of Deuteronomy, please!"
Later in the post, Scudera cited a report by Equality Matters, which alleges that Chik-fil-A has donated millions of dollars to groups that oppose homosexuality. The report also states that the fast-food chain donated nearly $2 million to similar causes in 2010 alone. Additionally, Scudera drew comparisons between the Old Testament and Chik-fil-A's operating procedures.
"Swine is forbidden, but bacon is OK, is that right?" asked Scudera. "Oh, teach me, Mr. Cathy, teach me! Remember: your fast-food restaurant is my portal to Christ!"
To date, the blog post has received over 650 shares on Facebook, with an additional 2,300 "likes." The post has also received nearly 700 comments, which highlight the sharp divide on the issue.
Where do you stand on the issue of Chik-fil-A endorsing the biblical definition of marriage? Do you agree with Professor Scudera?
