Bomb Squad Examines Suspicious Package at East Norriton ShopRite

A package was found outside of the building, and it was supposedly beeping, say police.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called to examine a suspicious package at the ShopRite on the 0 block of East Germantown Pike in East Norriton Tuesday morning after a person, who may have been an employee, noticed the package, which was beeping.

The person saw the package and threw it onto a grassy area. A 911 call was made around 9:41 a.m. according to a representative form the East Norriton Police Department.

The bomb squad, East Norriton police and the Norriton Fire Company arrived on the scene, where the bomb squad found what appeared to be wires in the package.

“They exploded it on scene and later found that it was not explosive in nature and that it was a security device, like it had been part of a retail theft,” said the police representative.

It could be that people had been trying to hide the theft, he added.

In light of the Boston marathon bombings, people are on edge. “When suspicious packages are found, they are treated like an explosive device,” the representative said.

“It was a well-coordinated effort on everyone’s part,” he said.
