CORRECTION: Juvenile Arrested In Wednesday Shooting Not Identified as Shooter

Original reporting indicating the suspect had been identified by a witness was incorrect.

On Thursday, Norristown Patch reported on a shooting incident in the area of DeKalb and Jacoby streets in Norristown on Wednesday, Oct. 31, and reported that a juvenile suspect was arrested and identified as the shooter. A later update to that story on Patch with information posted on The Times Herald's website indicated that Norristown Police Chief Russel Bono refuted information in earlier police reports, stating that the juvenile suspect was not identified as the shooter.

After conferring with Chief Bono and reexamining the original report, it is clear that the error was made by Norristown Patch. I misread a key line of the report which stated:

"[The juvenile suspect] was later unidentified as the shooter of Jacoby and DeKalb Sts."

The use of the word "unidentified" as a verb is rare in police reports and I mistakenly read it as "identified." I sincerely regret the error and apologize for any inconvenience or alarm the error may have caused.

As a journalist, I accept that typos and errors in reporting are an inevitable and regrettable part of my job. I strive to always provide accurate and well-written news to my readers and I hope to continue to provide that service. I will be vigilant for potential errors in the future.
