Drunken Driver Leads Cops on Chase Through Norristown, Police Say

Leonard Moore, of Norristown, reportedly lead police on a vehicle chase before striking a parked vehicle and attempting to flee on foot.

Norristown police were led on a brief vehicle and foot pursuit on Tuesday morning, after attempting to stop a vehicle with an expired registration and broken tail lights near the intersection of West Airy and Barbadoes streets.

Police initially attempted to stop the blue Buick Regal around 2 a.m. by activating their emergency lights and sirens, but the Buick accelerated west on the 200 block of West Airy Street, before going north to Markley Street, east onto West Marshall Street, south on Norris Street and then west onto the 100 block of West Airy Street, according to the report.

The driver – identified as Leonard Moore, of Norristown – then exited the Buick without putting the vehicle in park, causing it to strike a parked Ford Explorer, police said. Moore then fled north through Palm Aly on foot, but police apprehended him a short time later while he was hiding in a yard on the 500 block of Barbadoes Street, the report states.

Upon being arrested, Moore reportedly said "I don't know how to drive, and I'm really drunk," according to the report. Moore was then taken to Einstein Montgomery Hospital for a chemical test of his blood, police said.

After being transported to the Norristown Police Department, Moore was held for arraignment on charges of DUI and related offenses. He did not possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license, according to the report.
