Chemical Leak on Powell Street Forces Evac, Sends Two to Hospital

Powell Street will remain closed until emergency personnel clear the scene, and the building will be closed between 12 to 24 hours to allow the odor to dissipate.

A chemical leak at the Montgomery Professional Building on Powell Street forced the evacuation of the building and sent two people to the hospital Tuesday morning.

The leak was reported at 11:18 a.m. on the 1300 block of Powell Street, according to MontCo DPS. A total of 18 residents were treated for symptoms, according to PA Driver Watch, and two were taken from the scene via ambulance to Mercy Suburban Hospital.

According to a report in the Times Herald, the cause of the leak was HVAC contractors who were pouring a polyurethane liquid on the roof. The fluid then somehow got inside of the building, the report states.
