Hail to the Chief

Lower Pottsgrove introduces new top cop.

There's a new sheriff in town.

On July 9, Lower Pottsgrove Township introduced its new chief of police, Michael A. Foltz.

Foltz is a lifelong township resident, graduating from Pottsgrove High School in 1986 before joining the township police force as a patrolman in November of 1988. In his 24 years on the force, Foltz has seen Lower Pottsgrove evolve along with its police department, and is proud to serve his beloved community in this role.

“When I was hired, I was the eighth officer on the force—and we stayed at that number for almost 10 years,” recalled Foltz. “Now, we have 16 on the force with one opening to be filled.”

When Foltz was hired, the township’s chief of police was Richard Lengel—a man Foltz endeavors to emulate.

“Chief Lengel was very active in the community and on the street,” Foltz remembers. “Right now, my focus is administrative—solving personnel issues and the like. But eventually, I’d like to create more interaction with this community. I’d like to mingle with the public and let them get to know their chief.”

Foltz holds a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice from Albright College in Reading and a Master’s in public safety administration from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He is also a graduate of the 244th session of the FBI National Academy.  Foltz lives with his wife Kathy and their two children—a son and a daughter.

After a career’s worth of serving the Lower Pottsgrove community in law enforcement, Foltz plans to make the most of his rise to the top of the department.

“My biggest goal is to build Lower Pottsgrove into one of the area’s most professional police departments,” he said. “I want my people respected by the community—that is the legacy I want to leave behind.”
