Alleged Giant Food Store Thieves ID'd in Lower Providence

Patch recently reported on the three women being sought in connection with several thefts at a local Giant Food Store in recent weeks and the Lower Providence Police Department has now confirmed that they have identified the women in surveillance footage from the store.

Authorities have not yet taken the women into custody and are not currently releasing their identities.

According to police reports, officers responded to the Giant Food Store at 2670 Egypt Road on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 8:45 p.m. for a report of a theft. On the scene, a cashier and a loss prevention officer for the store reportedly told police that on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at approximately 9 p.m., a woman dressed in blue scrubs approached the customer service desk and attempted to return two items – a botte of Stacker diet pills and a jar of hair gel. The value of the items was $59.68.

The woman reportedly told the cashier she did not have a receipt for the item or her Giant bouns card to verify her purchase. The cashier declined to accept the items for return and the woman allegedly left with the merchandise.

The next day, the cashier told the store's loss prevention officer about the woman's attempt to return merchandise without a receipt and the officer reportedly consulted surveillance video of the incident. The officer reportedly observed the woman entering the store in the company of two other women who entered the health and beauty aisle and allegedly placed items from the shelves into their purses.

According to the reprot, the women then went to the check out and paid for items in their cart with a Giant gift card. The officer told police the card is believed to have been issued for a return of stolen items. The value of the merchandise allegedly taken from the shelf and not paid for was reportedly $75.95.

All three women were observed leaving the store together and driving away in a Silver Ford Escort driven by the first woman in blue scrubs.

On Sunday, Feb. 3, an officer returned to the store for another reported theft, allegedly perpetrated by one of the three women.

The loss prevention officer for the store told police that on Jan. 29 between 5:20 and 5:30 p.m., one of the women from the previously reported Jan. 30 incident was seen on video surveillance entering the store and heading to the baby aisle where she removed Triple Paste and Melatonin from the shelf and allegedly concealed them in a Giant shopping bag. The woman then allegedly returned the merchandise and, because she did not have a receipt, was issued a store gift card valued at $28.98. She was then observed leaving the store parking lot in a silver four-door sedan.

Reports of the incidents along with still photos and video surveillance were turned over to Lower Providence officers as evidence.
