UPDATE: More Details on Last Night's Lafayette Street Fire

According to the Norristown Fire Department, firefighters responded to the 600 block of West Lafayette Street shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday night for a fire in a vacant building. On arrival, smoke and flames could be seen coming from the rear of the property.

Once inside, crews found intense flames on the second floor coming from the walls, ceiling and the floor below. The fire also extended into the attic of the building and the attached home.

Additional fire departments from East Norriton, Jefferson, Barren Hill, Swedeland, Good Will, Bridgeport and Conshohocken, as well as responders from Plymouth Ambulance responded to the scene, and crews were able to control the fire within 40 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Fire departments from Center Square, Limerick and Royersford covered Norristown for any additional fire calls while they battled the Lafayette Street blaze.

Montgomery County Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Breaking News Network (BNN) are reporting a working fire on the 600 block of Lafayette Street in Norristown.

The Norristown Fire Department responded to a report of a building fire shortly before 11 p.m. this evening. There are reports of flames coming from the roof and heaving smoke coming from the rear of the building.

A Norristown Patch reader reports that Main Street is shut down from Chain Street to Haws Avenue.

Firefighters are declared the fire under control shortly after 11:30 p.m. According to reports from the scanner, two adults and two children were referred to the Red Cross for disaster assistance.
