Norristown Sets Black History Month Celebration for Feb. 6

Norristown Black History Committee to honor "Jock" Livers, first African American owner of inspection station in the county.

Norristown Police Capt. Willie G. Richet said that today's children can remember that the opportunities they have today were often made possible by those that came before them.

According to an article in The Times Herald, the Norristown Black History Committee plans to honor its heritage on Feb. 6.

"It is important for our young people to know more about their heritage. They can see what their forefathers went through in order for them to enjoy what they have today," said Richet, an organizer of the Norristown Black History Committee, to the Herald. "It wasn’t as easy for them."

The day's event will be held at Norristown Municipal Hall. Black History Month is traditionally celebrated throughout the month of February. According to History.com, it has been honored by each president since 1976.

The Norristown day will honor Lawrence "Jock" Livers Sr. Livers is known for as a famed track star at A.D. Eisenhower. He is now 90, and will be celebrated for his service in World War II, as well as being the first African American owner of a Pennsylvania inspection station in Montgomery County.

For the full story on the day's event, see this report in the Herald.

And there are those who scream for fairness and equal rights for all when blacks are still signaled out in days such as this. No, I guess they are different since they have to be commemorated on a special day. I suppose there isn't a day for White History month, huh? I wonder who the racist are....

Why on a Wednesday? Why not on a Saturday when people are more likely to attend?

All racist undertones aside, you do have a valid point. Norristown should celebrate the other cultures representative of the melting pot that we proudly call home. We should celebrate the Irish, Italian, Mexican, and other immigrants who have made positive contributions to the community, much in the same manner that we are celebrating and recognizing the contributions that Lawrence "Jock" Livers Sr has made.

Caucasian's day is everyday, Mexican's get a day to celebrate and we get a month so why are you crying.

How can you have a day for a month? Are you really that illiterate? There are plenty of holidays for white ethnicities to celebrate their culture and diversity. The Irish have St Patricks Day, and the Italians have Columbus Day. I highly doubt you're outraged about the celebration of those two holidays, so it's pretty obvious what actually upsets you-acknowledging and respecting the contribution of African American's in Norristown. As someone whose family has been in Norristown since immigrating to this country over 100 years ago, you're the type of person I don't want in my city.

Seriously, it's not like these crybabies are whining about St Patrick's Day and Columbus Day being hypocritical, and I doubt they ever take issue with those celebrations.

Maybe February 6th there will be no shootings in norristown. Or at least if there is a shooting the neighbors will actually speak up on whats going on
