Upper Merion Police Patroling Schools, Norristown to Review School Security Procedures

Following the tragic mass shooting in an elementary school in Connecticut last month, local police are partnering with school districts to increase school security.

Following one of the worst school shootings in the history of our country, local police departments are working with school districts to enhance security in area schools.

According to Main Line Media News, Upper Merion Police have already begun foot patrols in UM school district buildings starting Jan. 2.

"With each school shooting incident that occurs across the country we have re-evaluated what we are doing to prevent this tragedy in Upper Merion Township," Upper Merion Police Tom Chief Nolan told MLMN. "Our main goal is to make these schools a less appealing target because any potential actors will be aware that the police are often at the school and may arrive at any moment."

Norristown Police Chief Russel Bono told Patch that he contacted Norristown Area School Superintendent Janet Samuels the day after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting incident to offer his department's help in reviewing the school's security procedures.

"We're in the process of scheduling a meeting with the school district now," said Chief Bono.

The West Norriton Police Department was visible on the Norristown Area High School campus a week after the Sandy Hook shooting when a text message threatening violence at an unnamed school was circulated among students in several districts.

According to MLMN, the Bridgeport Police Department will be patrolling Brisgeport Elementary as well.
