Water Main Break Causes Water Loss for Norristown and Surrounding Area

A water main break in the Whitemarsh area shut down Butler Pike near Ridge Pike on New Year's Day.

A water main break early Tuesday morning shut down Butler Pike near Ridge Pike, according to Whitemarsh Police.

The break occurred at about 8 a.m. on New Year's Day, but the reason is currently unknown. Aqua PA representatives said it was a 12-inch cast-iron main that broke, causing outages in Whitemarsh, Plymouth, Whitpain, East Norriton, and Norristown, according to FOX Philly.

Part of the roadway also buckled under the weight of the heavy, flood-like waters, and a Whitemarsh Police dispatcher told Patch they expect the road to be closed for an "extended period of time." Aqua PA representatives told FOX that service should be returned to some customers within the day.
