Council Meets Tonight to Revoke 'Three Strikes' Ordinance

Norristown Municipal Council meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Norristown Municipal Hall, 235 E. Airy Street, and among the topics on tonight's agenda will be a vote to revoke Norristown's "Three Strikes Ordinance."

The ordinance was designed to give the municipality an avenue for dealing with landlords whose tenants are considered repeat offenders by police when it comes to disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and other illegal behavior. The ordinance would require a landlord of a targeted property to develop a plan of action and could eventually result in a hearing at which the revocation of the rental license would be considered.

According to Municipal Manager Dave Forrest, the American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter to the municipality arguing the ordinance denied landlords and tenants due process and threatening legal action. Council will discuss the matter at tonight's meeting. [Read more about the ordinance here.]

Council will also be introducing an ordinance regarding delinquent taxes, approving contracts for the DeKalb Street Ave of the Arts Streetscape Phase II project and for Zoning Permit/Building & Code software.
