Cy Burke Named to Open At-Large Council Seat

Burke will fill the seat left open when former Councilman Dwayne Royster stepped down in April.

Norristown Municipal Council held a special meeting Friday evening at Norristown Municipal Hall and named Cyril "Cy" Burke as interim replacement for former At-Large Councilman Dwayne Royster's seat. Royster stepped down on April 5.

Burke, who is retired, currently serves on the board of Norristown's Municipal Waste Authority and worked locally as a manager for the 2010 U.S. Census. He and his wife, Donna, lived in Norristown for six years and Burke is said to be well liked and respected in the municipality.

"We were looking for an individual who was intelligent, could understand the dynamics of the position, who could make good, strong decisions as well as understand that this was a short-term [assignment]," said Council President Gary Simpson of council's choice of Burke for the seat.

Simpson said other candidates were considered, including former council members, but Burke was the best fit for the position.

Burke will be sworn in at Tuesday's council meeting. Hold the seat until the November election, when a new council member will be elected.
