Health Department to Spray for Mosquitos in Norristown, East Norriton and West Norriton

The department will begin spraying in our area next week to control the adult mosquito population and protect residents from possible West Nile infection.

According to a release from the Montgomery County Health Department (MCHD), after consulting with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), the department will be spraying (or "adulticiding") to control the adult mosquito population in selected areas of Norristown, East Norriton and West Norriton next week.

The spraying will be done, weather permitting, on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 8-11:30 p.m., where sampling by the Health Department and PADEP has shown mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus. An alternate spray date is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 12.

The spraying will include residential streets contained in the boundaries of West Marshall Street, Stanbridge Street, North Whitehall Road and Sterigere Street. The spray will also include selected sections of the Norristown Farm Park, Norristown State Hospital, and Elmwood Park, including Harding Boulevard.

All spraying will be performed by MCHD and will not include aerial spraying. Workers will be using Biomist 3+15 at a rate of 1.5 fluid ounces per acre with a truck mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayer.

The Health Department will work with appropriate agencies to identify, eliminate, or treat with larvacide, areas where mosquitoes are breeding.

Residents may contact the Health Department at 610-278-5117 if they are concerned about an area of standing water that may be a breeding area. The adult mosquito control program will only be used in limited situations to reduce large numbers of adult mosquitoes.

For further information about the products being used, visit the EPA website.

I love how it's being done when summers over now! My kids and I are already bitten up. They even get in my house. I can't stand it. But at least it's getting done I guess! It's about time Norristown actually does something around here!

I wish they would spray over in my area between Egypt and S. Schuylkill Roads. It’s horrible over here. I agree with the previous poster, stinks they are doing it now that summer is over and we are bitten up already. Just hope we have not been exposed to West Nile.
