Norristown Council Selects New President and Makes Appointments

William Caldwell and Linda Christian were voted in as president and vice president, respectively.

The Norristown municipal council held their annual reorganization meeting the evening of Monday, Jan. 6, where they voted in a new council president and vice president, swore in new members and assigned councilmembers to their 2014 committee posts.

Councilmember William Caldwell was nominated and voted in as president, and councilmember Linda Christian was nominated voted in as vice president. Caldwell replaces Gary Simpson as president and Christian replaces Caldwell as vice president.

“It is always and forever an honor to serve both my colleagues and the people of Norristown,” said Caldwell, after taking his new seat.

He said that council will be committed to helping to develop a vibrant downtown, including economic development, and also to preserve the “historical fabric” of the town. Another priority is to help make neighborhoods safe for the people who live there.

Caldwell referenced Norristown’s new police chief Mark Talbot, Sr. and its new municipal administrator Crandall Jones, stating that the municipality has a good team in place.

New councilmembers Sonya D. Fisher Sanders and Derrick D. Perry were sworn in by Montgomery County District Court Judge Margaret A. Hunsicker. Sanders will represent ward one and Perry is a council-at-large member. Councilmember Marlon Millner was sworn in by Common Pleas Court Judge Senior Judge William T. Nicholas. 

Also sworn in was longtime Norristown Ambassador Hank Cisco, who was set to continue his duties after being sworn in by Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Senior Judge William T. Nicholas. 

The following council committee chair appointments were made at the meeting:

-Administrative Personnel: Linda Christian

-Finance: Bill Caldwell

-Public Safety: Linda Christian

-Planning & Business Development: Gary Simpson

-Codes: Olivia Brady

-Public Works: Marlon Millner
