Exercise – It all Starts Somewhere

By John Focht

We all have to start out somewhere.  This statement especially holds true for exercising and working out.  When trying to get back into shape, or trying to get exercise back into your plan, you need to start at the beginning.

Most attempts at daily exercise and workouts fail because people tend to try to do everything all at once.  Exhaustion and frustration quickly set in, and your exercise program is out the window.  When it comes to exercise and workouts, you are not a sports car that can go from zero to 60 in less than five seconds.  Unfortunately, most of you are old pickups with a front headlight out.

When starting that new exercise program, start with the very basic on what you can do, not what you want to do.  Try to do some sit-ups and pushups.  How many can you do?

Don’t worry about the number of sit-ups and pushups you actually do.  Instead, focus on doing sit-ups and pushups every day.  Also, focus on increasing the number of sit-ups and pushups you do every day by one. That’s right, just increase by one per day.

Even if you are only able to do five sit-ups and five pushups on the first day of your workout, don’t think of it as you were only able to do five sit-ups and pushups, but instead think of it as that’s five more sit-ups and pushups you did yesterday.  Now increase the number of sit-ups and pushups by one tomorrow and continue each and every day.  By end of week, you will have doubled the amount of sit-ups and pushups you were able to do last week.

Continue increasing the daily pushups and sit-ups, and by end of month you are doing more than you have since you were in college. You will also start to feel stronger, healthier, and more confident in yourself.  Add a walk to your daily pushup and sit-up exercise routine and you will be feeling better about yourself than you have in years.

Now that you have eased into working out, and you have it as part of a routine, you are probably able to step up your game a bit.  Go join a gym, or sign-up for class, or run in a race.  Exercise and workouts start somewhere.  Start with what you can do, and in no time at all, you will be doing what you want to do.
