Sometimes Ham and Cheese Just Won’t Cut It

By John Focht

Bored of brown-bagging the same sandwich or two every week?  Or, tired of dropping $10 just to get a decent sandwich during the work week?  Instead, just add ten minutes to your morning and you can add a little variety to your lunch every week.

Take an ordinary ham and cheese sandwich that you typically pack.  Usually a little variety to this sandwich means switching between white and wheat bread, or do we dare to dream ham and cheese on a roll?

To spice things up for lunch tomorrow, first wake up about ten minutes earlier to allow yourself time to create your masterpiece.  Next, toast the bread – you can decide between white or wheat.

Once toasted, get out some honey mustard.  Regular mustard or even mayonnaise will do, but for a real good taste, get yourself some honey mustard.  Once you’ve spread the honey mustard, add your ham and cheese.

Now wait, you are not done yet.  Get a sandwich baggie and throw some tomato and lettuce in there.  Don’t add it to your sandwich, just pack it in your bag.

At lunch, throw your toasted ham and cheese into the microwave for about 45 seconds.  Be sure to clean out any melted ham and cheese from the microwave – don’t be that office person who leaves a messy microwave.  The heated honey mustard that you spread earlier will add a great taste.

Now add your lettuce and tomato, and presto, you’ve got yourself a warm ham and cheese with lettuce and tomato.  As close as you can get to a grilled ham and cheese.

Your hot ham and cheese has now become the envy of everyone in your office.  And don’t let anyone fool you by telling you their frozen/microwave ham and cheese sandwich they bought from their supermarket frozen food section even compares.

Best yet, you didn’t even have to spend the $10 on hot sandwich. The whole meal probably cost you about a buck.

So, get started early and spice up lunch tomorrow afternoon.
