What the Heck is a Linkback?

By John Focht

There are many different ways for a website owner to gain notoriety for their website or for an article they have published on a website.  For website owners who are trying to make a jump up the search engine results, linkbacks can provide a sweet sound of satisfaction.

A linkback is a notification of sorts to a website owner that a link to either their website, or a page on their website, has been referenced on another site.  If an article you have written is being referenced in another web article, proper citation is required to your article on the other site.  This citation can happen in the form of your link appearing on the other website.

So why should this be so appealing?  For one, it should be considered an honor that an article that you wrote is being referenced in another’s work; that in and of itself should be pretty rewarding.

The other reason why it is so rewarding is that search engines, like Google and Bing, provide stronger search results for websites that can be found referenced on other websites; this process being called linkbacks.
