Norristown Area School Board Considers Extending School Year

The board is looking to make up school time lost during Hurricane Sandy.

According to The Times Herald, the Norristown Area School Board considered making some changes to school calendar at its Monday night meeting in an effort to make up for the two days lost as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Possible fixes discussed reportedly include a shorter spring break and/or extending the school year by a day or two. It's also possible the state Department of Education will grant waivers to districts affected by the storm which would allow them to have fewer than the 180 school days mandated.

Paul Fly Elementary in East Norriton faces an additional problem with the May primaries. The school is a polling place and the school's layout reportedly makes it impossible to keep the students separated from the polls. The school district's lawyer has reportedly sent letters to the Board of Elections asking them to change the location, but has yet to receive an answer.

No there isn't fair to our kids. I won't send mine if they do. Take time off the spring break. No need for all that time off. I see snow make up days not a hurricane make up day

The kids shouldn't have to pay a price for safety. It was a danger for them during Sandy...it is sometimes a danger during the snow. How about today? Nobody from the scho board is going to pick my kids up in this mess!!

Most people don't realize how little homework is given to kids at Norristown high; they already don't do much work to prepare for college OR employed life as it is. I vote for school ALL YEAR ROUND, and let them out at 5PM!

People don't realize that Norristown high gives out hardly any homework to start out with as they inexplicably caved to parent pressure to have it greatly reduced a few years ago. These kids are hardly going to be properly prepared for college OR employed life as it stands. I vote school is open YEAR ROUND and the students stay in until 5 PM!
