Whiz Kid: Alicia Haggard

The 10-year-old Marshall Street Elementary student is vaulting to the top.

Each week, Norristown Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these Whiz Kids.

This week's honoree is 10-year-old Alicia Haggard.

School:

Accomplishment: Alicia qualified for the state gymnastics meet.

Key to Awesomeness: Alicia has taken a handful of gymnastics classes since she was 4, but last year made the decision to pursue her training more intensely.

“My favorite thing about gymnastics is that I get to move around, and I love tumbling," she said. "When I’m turning around on the bars, it feels like I’m flying.”

This past fall, Alicia joined the competition team at Turner’s Gymnastics in East Norriton. At a competition, each gymnast must compete in four events: vault, floor, uneven bars and balance beam. Alicia’s favorite event is the balance beam, but admits sometimes it's hard to stick the landing.

In addition to her schoolwork and serving as a school safety, Alicia attends two and a half hours of gymnastic practice three times a week.

According to Rachel Fecho, who nominated Alicia, “she even practices outside of regular practice sessions. She’ll find a small piece of floor in a room and start walking through her balance beam routine.”

All of that practice and perseverance paid off. In February, at only her second competition, Alicia won a medal for the vault event and qualified to participate in a statewide competition. She is a little nervous for the upcoming competition in March, but plans to “work on all of the pointers from my coach like keeping my legs straight and toes pointed.”

When asked what she wants to do with all of her gymnastics training, the answer came quickly.

“It is my goal and dream to go to the Olympics,” she said.

So what does this Olympic hopeful do in her downtime? “I like to play with friends and my sisters," she said. "Sometimes, I write plays.”
