Tree Fire on Trooper and Rogers Roads Delays Local Traffic

Power lines spark fire in a pine tree in Lower Providence Township.

At 12:21 p.m. today, Lower Providence Township's fire and rescue squads were called out to Rogers Road at Trooper Road for a woods/field fire. At the intersection, fire crews located a large pine tree set ablaze presumably from nearby powerlines that were sparking. Rescue squads at the scene said the fire was not in danger of nearby homes, and that there were no reported injuries or major damage. Traffic in the local area, along the busy section of Trooper Road in Lower Providence Township, however is delayed. Rogers Road is closed from its curve to Trooper due to crews working in the area. Emergency responders are currently awaiting a PECO Energy representative and work crew for more information on what may have caused the sparks and fire…

Red Cross Assisting Family Displaced in Buttonwood Street Fire

The seven-member family whose home caught fire on the 1000 block of Buttonwood Street yesterday are staying at the Red Cross' center for disaster recovery in University City.

Yesterday's fire on the 1000 block of Buttonwood Street displaced a family of seven. The family is currently being assisted by the Red Cross and staying at the Red Cross House – the agency's center for disaster recovery located in Philadelphia.  All assistance by the Red Cross is provided free of charge and funded entirely by donations. Trailer Crashes Through Fence, Wall at Local Church

A car accident involving a parishioner at a local church caused a lot of damage, but no injuries.

Police were called to the scene of a serious accident shortly after 8:30 a.m. this morning in the parking lot of St. Patrick's Church at Green and East Oak streets today. Witnesses to the scene say an older parishioner who had just attended mass had stopped to deposit recycling in the bin located in the church parking lot and mistakingly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake as he approached the bin. His vehicle lurched forward, striking a trailer parked in the lot and pushing it through the fence and wall on the Green Street side. When officers arrived, the trailer was hanging over the edge of the wall. The trailer, fence and wall all sustained heavy damage. The driver of the vehicle was reportedly unharmed. Worker Killed By Roll of Newsprint at Inquirer Plant

The accident happened in a loading dock area in the rear of the facility.

A 43-year-old Delaware man was killed Friday morning at the Upper Merion printing facility of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, WCAU-TV reports. Jefferson Troester was crushed beneath a 1,500-pound roll of newsprint that fell out of a railroad boxcar when the door was opened at about 9:30 a.m., police said. He worked for ArcelorMittal, a steel and mining company. Contractors had to be brought in to free Troester's body from beneath the roll of paper. The facility is located on Route 23, a few hundred feet from the West Conshohocken municipal boundary.

Underwear Thief Arrested for Looking Up Woman's Skirt at Mall

Chan, of Dresher, was arrested on Sunday, he was caught using a hidden camera to look up a woman's skirt at the King of Prussia Mall.

Kornwell Chan, of Dresher, who was arrested in Jan. 2012 for burglarizing a home and allegedly stealing only women’s underwear, has been arrested on Sunday for another incident. According to 6ABC, Chan is charged with using a camera to look up a woman’s skirt at the King of Prussia Mall. A loss prevention officer recognized him from a flier that was handed out a few months prior. The flier was created after an incident in September in which a man was spotted looking up a woman’s dress with a hidden camera. Chan has been out on $100,000 bail. According to the 6ABC report, the D.A.’s office had filed  a bail revocation motion because of these new charges. Chan is currently being held on $500,000 bail.

House Fire on Buttonwood Street Quickly Controlled

A neighbor passing by saw smoke coming from a second story window and called 911.

The Norristown Fire Department and Norristown Police responded to a call of a dwelling fire in the 1000 block of Buttonwood Street at Sterigere Street shortly before 11 a.m. this morning. A neighbor walking by saw smoke coming from a second floor window and called 911. According to Norristown Fire Chief Thomas O'Donnell, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the second floor of the family home and get it under control quickly. No one was injured in the incident. The cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation.

Twelve Waive Charges to County Court in Meth Ring Case

A second preliminary hearing for the remaining suspects is set for May 24 before District Judge Andrea Duffy

At the District Court of Judge Andrea Duffy Wednesday morning, 12 of the 32 suspects arrested May 8 in connection with a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking ring waived all charges against them to a July 5 arraignment in the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas. Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Jason Whalley said a preliminary hearing will be held May 24 at 10:45 a.m. for the remaining 20 suspects, including what he called the "big players": Francesco "Frank" Messina, Dave Penna and Jeff Penna. A 60-year-old Lansdale man was found slumped over in a grassy area by the tennis courts Wednesday morning.

Police to Upgrade Reporting System with JAG Grant Funds

Norristown Police Chief Russel Bono hopes to use the federal funds to upgrade the police record reporting software.

During the Public Safety Committee report at last night's municipal council meeting, council members were treated to some good news from Norristown Police Chief Russel Bono. Chief Bono informed council that a federal Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) in the amount of $57,116 was awarded to Norristown and Pottstown. Norristown's portion comes to $37,691. Chief Bono told council that he hoped to use the funds to upgrade his department's aging records reporting system. "It is my preference that we use the bulk of it to upgrade our Cody records management system," Chief Bono said. Missing Quakertown Girl Found

Alanah Ross has returned home to Richland Township

Former missing teenager Alanah Ross, of Richland Township, has been found. According to the Facebook page of Ross's mother, Michelle Long Ross, Alanah has been found after "10 long, frightening days. Ross credited her brother-in-law for helping get Alanah back home. "You will all never know how much your outpouring of love and concern has meant to our family. There is no situation that I can think of that is more difficult than not knowing where your child is or if they are safe," wrote Ross in her Facebook post Tuesday night. "Alanah is thankfully safe and we are so glad she has been found." I think it doesn't help to speculate about what happened. That just invades the family's privacy. If there's a police matter, we'll hear about it. Otherwise, I think it's best to respect the family's privacy and share in the relief that they are reunited.   more ›
