Fashion Fundraiser Planned for this Saturday in Norristown

Nine-year-old Mady Grebe is putting her budding talent for fashion to work at 'Fashion on Wheels,' an event to raise money to buy wheelchairs for those in need.

Mady Grebe is the sort of girl who listens in class.  It was in her third grade health class at Marshall Street Elementary School that the nine-year-old learned about victims of head and spinal trauma who became paralyzed. "She was really moved by their stories and said that she wanted to raise money for them," said Amy Grebe, Mady's mom. Grebe, the artistic director of the ACPPA Community Art Center in Norristown, sent her daughter back to her health teacher for more information about how Mady could get involved in helping paraplegics. Her teacher, Ms. Brown, helped Mady find the Walkabout Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds for research into finding a cure for paralysis. The group also donates wheelchairs to people in need around …

Council Member Mimi DeSouza Honored With Award from Local Arts Group

The ACPPA Community Art Center will present the councilwoman with their first-ever Luminary Award at their April 28 fundraiser.

Norristown's council and community leaders have been touting the arts as a way to help revitalize Norristown for years now and one council member in particular has put her money where her mouth is. Earlier this year, Councilwoman Dr. Mary "Mimi" DeSouza gave up the $4000 annual stipend that each council member receives to offset travel and expenses and earmarked it for four local groups who's funding was in jeopardy as a result of Norristown's budget woes. "When we came around to the budget process for 2012, I saw a lot of community groups who did one or two activities or were trying to get off the ground and we literally could not fund them even a few hundred dollars," said DeSouza. DeSouza realized that while the stipend she received …

Zoning Board to Hear Appeals for Variances Tonight

Variances are being requested by two local businesses, the Norristown Regional Health Center and Grace Lutheran Church.

Norristown's Zoning Hearing Board is holding a public hearing on four scheduled appeals by local business and organizations. On the business side, Steve Fierro, owner of Fierro Iron Works at 407 East Lafayette Street is requesting a variance to expand the business by adding 6000 square feet. According to the request, they'll be demolishing three houses on Walnut Street to make room. Flower Saenz, of Easton, is requesting a variance to operate a used car sales lot at 371 East Main Street. The Norristown Regional Health Center at 1401 DeKalb Street is requesting a variance for the mural that's already been erected on the east side of the building by the ACPPA Community Art Center. Apparently folks at the Health Center didn't realize they …
