Formal Flag Retirement Scheduled For Saturday

Local Boy Scouts will retire tattered American flags during an evening ceremony at Montgomery Cemetery

Several local Boy Scout Troops are asking residents and businesses to drop off their damaged American flags at Montgomery Cemetery on Saturday, where they can be formally retired during an evening ceremony which disposes of the stars and stripes in a dignified fashion. "It's quite an honor for the scouts to be able to retire the flags," said Eileen Santori, who has been organizing the retirement ceremony for 10 years. "Last year we retired close to 2,000 flags." Prior to the ceremony, members of Troop 752, from Norristown, Troop 50, from Schwenksville, and Troop 100, from Philadelphia, will spend the day cleaning the cemetery and collecting flags from residents, businesses and grave stones. Afterwards, they'll properly dispose of the flags…
