The ACPPA Community Art Center will present the councilwoman with their first-ever Luminary Award at their April 28 fundraiser.
Norristown's council and community leaders have been touting the arts as a way to help revitalize Norristown for years now and one council member in particular has put her money where her mouth is. Earlier this year, Councilwoman Dr. Mary "Mimi" DeSouza gave up the $4000 annual stipend that each council member receives to offset travel and expenses and earmarked it for four local groups who's funding was in jeopardy as a result of Norristown's budget woes. "When we came around to the budget process for 2012, I saw a lot of community groups who did one or two activities or were trying to get off the ground and we literally could not fund them even a few hundred dollars," said DeSouza. Local artist Stefania Luciani recently visited Italy and France, bearing gifts of flags and honey and an invitation to Norristown's Bicentennial Celebration.

Norristown's Stefania Luciani is a multi-faceted, international artist whose works include everything from oil paintings to soft muted landscapes, to wall size oil canvasses and mosaics. Luciani recently returned from her "Heart of Unity Tour" in an effort to build identity and connect cultures through her art. Her travels took her to the Italian villages of Tollo, Tornareccio, Ravenna and Paris, France. Luciani met with the mayor of each city and presented them the Norristown flag, Norristown-produced honey and an invitation to return to Norristown for our bicentennial celebration. Proceeds from the 12th annual Phil's 5K Run and Kids' Run Wednesday will go to the Norristown Arts Council and other area nonprofits.
Members of the Ambler Area Running Club (AARC) and others will dash for a good cause during the 12th annual Phil’s Tavern 5K Run and Kids’ Run Wednsday, July 20. AARC President Dr. Ian Meyers said 700 people participated in last year’s run and raised $10,000 for area nonprofit organizations. Race proceeds this year will be shared with: According to Meyers, AARC’s board selects race beneficiaries from nominations made by members for two annual races, Phil’s 5K Run and the Frostbite 5-Miler in February. The Montgomery County Commissioners approved a resolution that will bring money to the municipality.
The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution on Thursday, June 7, that will bring over $1.2 million to Norristown. The grants come as part of a county-wide community revitalization program that will provide seven municipalities with roughly $2.1 million for enhancement of public facilities. According to the resolution, Norristown will receive $200,000 to rehab the old Bell Telephone building into an arts venue, $231,000 for the DeKalb Street portion of the Arts Hill streetscape, $270,000 for the Elmwood Park Zoo parking lot expansion and $500,000 for the Studio Centre streetscape.
