Citizens for a Better Norristown aims to encourage and support average citizens with little political experience who want to run for office in Norristown, East Norriton and West Norriton.
More the three dozen residents turned out for a reception at the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library on Monday evening hosted by grassroots political group Citizens for a Better Norristown (CBN). According to members of the group, the aim of the evening was to introduce average citizens to the political process and encourage residents to run for local office. "We want to see good, quality people in office," said John Milligan, an executive committee member of CBN. This election season, the organization hopes to identify and support candidates, increase voter participation and educate voters. Speakers for the Monday evening program included West Norriton Commissioner Brian Kennedy, East Norriton Supervisor John Zurzola, Former …

The plant would allow West Norriton to discontinue paying Norristown for its waste treatment.
Now that the dust has settled on recent controversies like the Westover Country Club sports complex and finding a new township manager, West Norriton commissioners are turning their attention to the sewers. According to The Times Herald, the Board of Commissioners is reviewing a 2011 feasibility study on building a new sewage treatment plant for the township. The new plant would allow West Norriton to stop paying Norristown the 36% of operating costs for Norristown's plant – an agreement the two municipalities entered into in 1985 when Norristown took on treatment of West Norriton's waste water. It would also reportedly get them off the hook for the estimated $54 million (plus another $1.5 million for annual operating and maintenance costs…

Following the mysterious termination of township manager Karen Madden and the temporary reinstatement of retired former manager Joe Hein, West Norriton has posted its "Help Wanted" ad to the web.
In case you haven't been following the story in The Times Herald, our neighbors in West Norriton are hiring. According to The Herald, Township Manager Karen Madden's contract was inexplicably terminated in unanimous vote by the West Norriton Board of Commissioners in a special meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 1. While the official line is that she retired, quite a few folks have suggested some political power playing behind the scenes was involved. “It’s a startling development, because Karen Madden has been a long-time employee and was recently praised for her management of the budget process," a West Norriton resident told The Herald. "Several commissioners praised her. There was no hint of this retirement. This surprises me and it has come to…

Moody's backtracks and reissues 'negative' outlook on county's bond rating; incoming board may be legally unable to revisit 2012 budget.
The heads of Montgomery County's various departments queued up Tuesday before the county's Board of Commissioners to plead their respective budget cases as the county works to close a $44 million budget shortfall. The discussions took place as the county learned that Moody's Investor Service erred last week in calling the outlook on the county's Aaa bond rating "stable." Moody's retains a "negative" outlook for the county's ability to maintain its top-shelf creditworthiness. The pressure on the current board was ratcheted up further by county solicitor James Maza, who said state law may prevent the incoming Board of Commissioners from revisiting the budget in January, even if it wants to. Maza presented the commissioners with a written …

County government sidelined as state agency decides which local projects will receive gaming funds.
As construction continues on the Valley Forge Casino Resort alongside Route 422, Montgomery County's legislative contingent in Harrisburg has informed the county that there's "not much" it can do to take control of the revenue generated by the planned facility's gaming activity. Rather than having direct control over the 2 percent "host fee" the gaming facility must pay, those funds will instead be doled out to county agencies selected by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. State Representative Robert Godshall (R-53, Montgomery) told the county's commissioners in a letter that changing the arrangement would require the introduction of a new gaming bill. "By virtue of its nature, [a bill] would attract dozens of amendments and be …

I certainly hope we have some diverse, well qualified candidates run in Norristown. I would be behind them 100%. I'm not sure who would want to spend all of this time running for office but I remain hopeful of good candidates coming forward.   more ›
