We'll tell you where to get your caffeine on and celebrate with a free cup of coffee.
If the first words out of your mouth every morning are, "I'll have a large coffee" — or if you can’t even speak until after you’ve had your java fix — there's a national holiday created especially for you. America will put staunch tea drinkers to shame on National Coffee Day today, Sept. 29, when coffee fiends can rejoice and celebrate their beloved coffee bean with free brew from national chains. Coffee was first brought to America in the mid-1600s on a ship en route to "New Amsterdam," now known as New York, according to the National Coffee Association. We have that shipment and the Boston Tea Party to thank for turning the nation into coffee drinkers. Many local cafes and businesses are participating in the national celebration. …

Great sandwiches, great service, and the best coffee in Norristown.
We asked and you answered, and once again Lou's Sandwich Shop was the answer on many people's lips. Not only did they take our "Best Zep in Norristown" title a few months ago, but in our recent "Best Coffee in Norristown" poll, they handily took down the competition. It was a wide field of competitors, but Lou's blasted past second-place winner Dunkin' Donuts on Markley & Johnson Highway and the Court House Diner to victory. I'll be stopping by Lou's this afternoon to present them with their certificate. If you haven't been by in a while, maybe you might want to pop in and try the coffee sometime. Check back with Norristown Patch on Monday for next week's poll.

We know you love your Starbucks, but what local haunt brews up the best joe in Norristown?
With word that Coffee Talk closed down, Norristown no longer has a dedicated coffee shop. We know a lot of folks get their fix at one of the nearby Starbucks' or even one of the many Dunkin' Donuts in town (some of us even hit up the Wawa or the 7-Eleven), but there are plenty of spots in town that serve up a piping hot pot of black gold every morning. I've heard the Court House Diner and Lou's Sandwich Shop both serve up a serious cup, and I know my dad is partial to the brew at the Norristown Food Mart. I'm sure there are other secret spots you'd like to share so let us know in the comments and we'll add it to our poll. In the meantime, vote your favorite in our poll below by 9 a.m. Friday. We'll present the winner with a certificate …

Pair these perfect summer to-go snacks and a cool summer drink.
Sometime in the spring, my tastes veer from hot coffee (preferably a latte) to iced coffee (iced white chocolate mocha = yum!). I also start spending more and more time outside the house, so snacks that are individually packaged and ready to go are best. My grandmom’s whoopie pie recipe – a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch recipe – is perfect for summer (and all year round, really). They’re sweet and filling and good on the go. I wrap mine individually in plastic wrap so they don’t stick together. I use my cookie scoop to make the cookies so they are almost all the same size. My iced coffee recipe has been something I have been perfecting for over a year now and I think I’ve got it. (I think mine is way better than any chain coffeehouse.) …

I agree. As much as I love the East and West Norriton locations, I'd love to be able to station myself a bit closer to the action in Norristown. :)   more ›
