Norristown Municipal Council meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Norristown Municipal Hall. Among the topics on the agenda are ammendments to the parking rates on West Marshall Street and further discussion of public parking at Poley Park. Council will also be awarding a contract to West Chester-based Lenni Electric to install a traffic light at West Airy and Noble streets, but first they'll entertain a motion to waive the 30-day waiting period required by the Responsible Contractor’s Ordinance. Under public safety, there's a motion before council to approve a resolution establishing guidelines for police making warrantless arrests and a motion to waive Norristown's open container rule for one day in anticipation of the beer garden planned for …

Council Member Mimi DeSouza Honored With Award from Local Arts Group

The ACPPA Community Art Center will present the councilwoman with their first-ever Luminary Award at their April 28 fundraiser.

Norristown's council and community leaders have been touting the arts as a way to help revitalize Norristown for years now and one council member in particular has put her money where her mouth is. Earlier this year, Councilwoman Dr. Mary "Mimi" DeSouza gave up the $4000 annual stipend that each council member receives to offset travel and expenses and earmarked it for four local groups who's funding was in jeopardy as a result of Norristown's budget woes. "When we came around to the budget process for 2012, I saw a lot of community groups who did one or two activities or were trying to get off the ground and we literally could not fund them even a few hundred dollars," said DeSouza. DeSouza realized that while the stipend she received …

Unfortunately there isn't a way to tap the PA system into my iPad (what I'm using to stream) for audio. Also, some of the microphones the council members are using aren't always working properly and some members are a little better at projecting than others. What I really need is an external shotgun mic that will work with an iPad, but I have yet to find one that works in the months I've been …   more ›

It's simple people. You only get tickets when you don't pay for parking or park illegally. Who the heck shops for longer than 2 hours on Marshall Street to make it a point to complain about the fees??? If the business owners' patrons cannot afford the $3 parking rate for what...maybe once per week visit, then maybe they need a better clientele. LOL   more ›

West Enders Turn Out to Voice Parking Concerns

More the 60 West End business owners, residents and suporters turned out for Tuesday's council meeting to voice their opposition to the new meters on West Marshall Street.

Though not officially on the agenda, the topic of parking took up a significant portion of the evening at last night's municipal council meeting as some two dozen folks signed up to speak on the issue during the public comment section of the evening. One by one, West End business owners, residents and area supporters took to the podium to ask council to address the concerns regarding the newly installed parking meters along the West Marshall Street business corridor. While many commenters raised similar complaints about the new parking measures – the $1.50-an-hour parking fees and the $28 tickets – others mentioned overly-aggressive enforcement and limited times as issues of concern.  The new meters were installed along the four blocks …

Norristown Municipal Council meets again tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Norristown Municipal Hall. Items on the agenda include discussions of the new fire truck lease, Sterigere Street storm water management and the 2012 road project. While not on the agenda tonight, the issue of parking meters along West Marshall Street is expected to be raised during the public comment section by residents of that area. Fliers in shop windows all along West End business district call for residents and patrons to attend tonight's meeting and speak out on the issue. Of concern is what business owners and others say are unreasonably high parking rates for the area, overly-aggressive enforcement and a general feeling of neglect felt by the business owners along …
