Steve Tolliver, of Cheltenham, and Gail Weilheimer, of Abington, are being recommended by a Democratic committee to be that party's candidates for the county Court of Common Pleas this election season.
The Montgomery County Democratic Committee (MCDC) announced its recommendations on Wednesday for candidates for Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas in the 2013 election. A judicial screening committee has selected Steve Tolliver, of Cheltenham, and Gail Weilheimer, of Abington, as potential party candidates. The candidates are expected to be officially endorsed at the county's endorsement convention on Feb. 28. Despite the recommendations, the MCDC welcomes all potential candidates to attend either the Feb 21. Citizens for a Better Norristown aims to encourage and support average citizens with little political experience who want to run for office in Norristown, East Norriton and West Norriton.
More the three dozen residents turned out for a reception at the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library on Monday evening hosted by grassroots political group Citizens for a Better Norristown (CBN). According to members of the group, the aim of the evening was to introduce average citizens to the political process and encourage residents to run for local office. "We want to see good, quality people in office," said John Milligan, an executive committee member of CBN. The 2012 General Election is over and the dust has cleared; now, what about those yard signs? And who do you call if you didn't like what you saw at the polls from your political party? Campaign Sign Recycling Montgomery County launched its campaign sign recycling program yesterday, and is accepting all leftover campaign signs at various locations throughout the county though Nov. 21. Last year, Montgomery County collected nearly 8 tons of metal and plastic signs in its campaign sign recycling program, which is run in conjunction with ReCommunity Recycling, Sullivan's Scrap Metals, Cougle's Recycling and the Montgomery County Republican and Democrat Committees. Pennsylvania released figures this week that reveal almost 45,000 registered voters in Montgomery County could not be matched with PennDOT ID numbers.
There are almost 45,000 registered voters in Montgomery County who do not have the PennDOT ID number required to be able to vote in the fall general election according to a Pennsylvania Department of State comparison of voter registration rolls and PennDOT ID databases. In March, state lawmakers approved a new voter ID bill (House Bill 934), sponsored by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Cranberry), that requires each voter to present proof of identification at every election. The law is scheduled to take effect for the Nov. 6 general election. The new law has been controversial, with Democrats challenging that it will disenfranchise voters without proper IDs and Republicans saying it will fight voter fraud. We've got the rundown on the local delegates going to each party's convention.
The polls have all reported in and while there wasn't much of a contest anywhere on the board in our area (except for the special election in the 153rd to fill Josh Shapiro's vacated seat), folks have been wondering who we'll be sending to the national conventions to represent the parties locally this year. Keep in mind these results are unofficial. Here's the rundown: Republicans The Republicans in District 13 (which includes Norristown and parts of East Norriton) were looking for three names for the convention in Tampa Bay, Florida in August. All 21 endorsements based of 2001 district maps; primary could be pushed back.
With the legislative district maps still in dispute, more than 400 Montgomery County Republicans gathered at the Crown Plaza in King of Prussia on Thursday night to endorse the GOP slate of candidates for the upcoming November election. Montgomery County Republican Committee Chairman Robert Kerns said that the party had to base its endorsements on the 2001 legislative map, and that depending on how the situation unfolds, the group may have to reschedule its primary election.
