The municipality is encouraging residents, local groups and families to sign up to march in this year's Independence Day.
The Norristown 4th of July Parade Committee is seeking participants for the muiciplaity's annual Independence Day parade. Organized groups, Scouts, Brownies, bands, family groups in costumes, theme groups, unusual groups or costumes in good taste, decorated vehicles, church groups, youth groups, sport teams, musical groups, singers, dancers and more are encouraged to apply to march in the parade. Norristown isn't just celebrating Independence Day today – all of our Fourth of July activities are part of the municipality's ongoing Bicentennial Celebration, so there's plenty of partying to be done. It all kicks off at 8:30 a.m. when, in celebration of our nation's independence, East Norriton, West Norriton, and the Municipality of Norristown will host the 4th Annual Celebration 5k run. The course begins and ends at Norristown Area High Schooland will be primarily run in the Norristown Farm Park. Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library. Registration for race day is $25 and begins at 7 a.m. on race day and ends at 8:15am. A limited number of t-shirts will be available on race day. …
To celebrate the 4th of July, Norristown's zoo is offering a reduced $4 admission for one day only.
Looking for something to do this Independence Day? There's plenty happening in Norristown between the run, the parade, the activities in the park, the concert and the fireworks, but if you're looking for one more bit if fun to cram in there, try the Elmwood Park Zoo. The zoo is offering discounted admission in honor of the Fourth of July holiday – just $4. The discounted admission for Wednesday, July 4, is being sponsored Beneficial Bank. In addition to the regular furry fun of visiting the zoo, there will be music, food and a moon bounce for the kids. Fireworks are a traditional part of Independence Day celebrations, but they can also be dangerous. Sadly, children and teens are too often hurt by fireworks. So before the celebration begins, read these fireworks safety tips from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). According to the AAO, of the 9,000 fireworks-related injuries each year, 21% are eye injuries and more than half of the victims are young children or teenagers. Last year's Independence Day was beautiful, with mostly sunny skies and highs around 90 degrees, but will this year be the same?
We have been in the second heat wave of the year and it will continue throughout the week and into the weekend. The problem with heat is that possibility of severe weather development. Thunderstorms are extremely hard to predict, especially location and timing. When there is an approaching holiday, like Independence Day, weather forecasting becomes crucial. Now the question is: Will rain cause headaches for the outside barbeques and firework shows? The answer is yes and no. You may have heard more talk and discussion about the term "derecho" in the last couple of days than you ever did in Spanish class after a damaging line of thunderstorms slapped South Jersey and Delaware around last Friday night.
