Alleged Giant Food Store Thieves ID'd in Lower Providence

Authorities confirm they have identified three women sought in connection with the alleged thefts.

Patch recently reported on the three women being sought in connection with several thefts at a local Giant Food Store in recent weeks and the Lower Providence Police Department has now confirmed that they have identified the women in surveillance footage from the store. Authorities have not yet taken the women into custody and are not currently releasing their identities. According to police reports, officers responded to the Giant Food Store at 2670 Egypt Road on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 8:45 p.m. for a report of a theft. On the scene, a cashier and a loss prevention officer for the store reportedly told police that on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at approximately 9 p.m., a woman dressed in blue scrubs approached the customer service desk and …

Thefts From Local Grocery Store Have Police Seeking Three Women

Three women are wanted for alleged thefts from Giant Food Store.

Lower Providence Police have released photos from a surveillance video showing three women authorities say may be involved in several retail thefts from an area Giant Food Store. Details of the thefts have note yet been released, but police say the thefts occurred in January and February of this year. Time and date stamps on the surveillance video indicate the photos were taken on Jan. 29 and 30. Anyone with information about the identities of the women pictured in the surveillance photographs is asked to contact LPPD at 610-539-5901 or call the anonymous tip line at 610-539-3195. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Report: Bomb Bandit in Blue Bell

A white male claiming to have a bomb on his person, took an unknown amount of money from the register and fled on foot.

Update 3 p.m.: Whitpain Police said the suspect had the fake bomb tied to his waist and wrapped in black electrical tape. The suspect then allegedly fled on foot, with no vehicle seen. The Abington Police Department's K-9 Unit found the device in the Giant's store driveway, a short distance away from the entrance. The suspect is described as being approximately 5'8" of thin build and was seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and white sneakers. According to the press release from the Whitpain Police, the suspect had adhesive tape across his nose and extending to both of his cheeks. He was also seen wearing sunglasses. Giant Announces Genuardi’s Conversion Schedule

The Genuardi's in King of Prussia will close July 5 and reopen as a Giant on July 15.

  Giant Food Stores, based in Carlisle, Pa., recently announced its schedule for converting 15 Philadelphia-area Genuardi’s locations to Giant supermarkets. Our area has already experienced a similar conversion when the Genuardi's in East Norriton, bought by Weis Markets, closed for a week in the beginning of June and reopened June 16 as a Weis. The Giant conversion will take place in three phases, the first of which will begin June 28. Five stores will close for ten days during each phase. The King of Prussia Genuardi’s is scheduled to close July 5 at 6 p.m. and will re-open as a Giant on July 15 at 8 a.m. The store's pharmacy will also close July 5 at 6 p.m., but will reopen on July 7 at 1 p.m. The in-store PNC Bank will also remain open…

Pints of the ice cream-maker's Chocolate Nougat Crunch contain "undeclared peanuts or tree nuts."

  Giant Food Stores, following a recall by Unilever, announced it removed from sale pints of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Nougat Crunch ice cream due to undeclared peanuts or tree nuts on the ingredient label. The affected product has date codes of JUL1113BJ1, JUL1213BJ1, AUG0113BJ1, AUG0213BJ1, AUG2313BJ1, AUG2413BJ1, AUG2513BJ1, SEP2013BJ1, SEP2113BJ1 or OCT2313BJ1 printed on the bottom of the pint. The UPC code for the pints of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Nougat Crunch Ice Cream is 7684020899. No illnesses have been reported to date, but people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts or tree nuts may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. Weis Markets Confirms Opening Date

Weis Markets will reopen it's newly purchased Delaware Valley stores on Saturday, June 16.

  According to a release issued by Weis Markets, the supermarket chain closed on its purchase of three former Genuardi’s stores in East Norriton, Conshohocken and Doylestown from owner Safeway on Monday June 11. Weis will reopen those stores on Saturday, June 16 at 6 a.m. In advance of these openings, each store’s pharmacy will remian open during the week to minimize prescription service disruption. To staff these stores, Weis Markets said it has hired 218 former Genuardi employees and has added 150 positions, which will allow each store to double the number of cashiers it employs and increase front-end service. --- Related Stories

East Norriton Genuardi's to Close Today, Weis Set to Open June 16

Weis Markets has yet to confirm it officially, but Genuardi's employees and customers and business insiders say the new supermarket will open next Saturday.

As previously reported in Norristown Patch, the Genuardi's on West Germantown Pike in East Norriton is set to close for good today at 6 p.m. While new owner of the location, Weis Markets, has yet to confirm when they'll reopen, employees and customers and at least one source in the food distributor business have reported that the store will be reopening as a Weis on Saturday, June 16. According to sources at the store, many Genuardi's employees will remain, working for Weis Markets. While the store will be closed for the week to make the transition, the pharmacy will remain open so customers will have access to their prescriptions. East Norriton Genuardi's to Close June 9

No word yet on when new owners Weis Markets will be opening up.

Norristown Patch reported earlier this year on the sale of several area Genuardi's locations, including the one on West Germantown Pike in East Norriton. That location is slated to close this Saturday, June 9. New owners Weis Markets have yet to give an official word on an opening date, but sources say the new store is expected to open sometime by end of summer if all goes according to plan. The West Norriton Genuardi's location on West Main Street (not included in the Weis purchase) closed March 10 and remains vacant. In the meantime, the East Norriton Genuardi's is clearing out its stock of Safeway brand products and all of its produce at prices slashed up to 30%. Giant Puts Free ‘Kid Healthy Ideas’ Mag on Shelves

The family-oriented magazine is designed to help kids have healthier lives. Also, Giant’s ‘Good Things Grow Kid Challenges.’

In its ongoing efforts to fight childhood obesity and help kids live healthier lifestyles, GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets recently announced a series of activities geared towards healthy kids this spring. Giant Recalls Cream Puffs Due to Undeclared Allergen

Simply Enjoy Vanilla Cream Puffs have been voluntarily recalled from Giant.

Giant Food Stores announced Friday that it is voluntarily pulling Simply Enjoy Vanilla Cream Puffs from its shelves. The frozen food product may contain milk, an undeclared allergen, not listed on the label. According to the release, customers with milk allergies who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions or bring their purchase receipt to the store for a full refund. The product is safe for consumption by individuals who do not suffer from a milk allergy. Symptoms of food allergies typically appear within a few minutes to two hours after a person has eaten a food that he or she is allergic to.
