Senior Health: 'A Matter of Balance'

Find out about falls – dangerous, predictable and preventable.

Falls are a major cause death for older adults and the leading cause of injury. Falls in older adults are common, dangerous, predictable and preventable so consider taking "A Matter of Balance," an eight-week, two-hour-a-day course at the Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County (Montco SAAC).  Classes help participants to: "A Matter of Balance" is a structured group intervention, which uses a variety of activities to address physical, social, and cognitive factors affecting fear of falling and to learn fall prevention strategies. The activities include group discussion, problem-solving, skill building, assertiveness training, videotapes, sharing practical solutions and exercise training. The program will run from May 2 and …

Health Department Holding Special Immunization Clinics to Meet School Deadlines

Parents are required to provide schools with an updated immunization record or their child may not be admitted to school.

According to a release issued by Montgomery County, the deadline for required school immunizations is approaching – on or about April 30 for most schools. Parents will be required to provide an updated immunization record prior to the deadline or their child may not be permitted to attend school. Parents should review their children’s vaccine status and if it is up to date, contact the school nurse with this information. If your child is not up to date, you should contact your healthcare provider to receive the vaccine. To help parents and caregivers who do not have a family physician or health insurance meet the requirements, the Montgomery County Health Department is holding four evening immunization clinics for school age children. Code Blue Declared for Our Area

Cold temperatures that pose a threat to vulnerable populations mean a "Cold Blue" will be in effect through Friday.

According to a release issued by the county, the Montgomery County Commissioners, on the advice of the Montgomery County Health Department, have declared a Code Blue Cold Weather Emergency for Montgomery County based on a review of forecasts from the National Weather Service. The Code Blue will be for the 48-hour period beginning at noon today, Jan. 18, until noon Friday, Jan. 20. A Code Blue Cold Weather declaration is made in Montgomery County when winter conditions pose a threat of serious harm or death to individuals without shelter. A Code Blue is called when the combination of air temperature and wind chill is anticipated to be 20º F or less. County Health Officials Warn of Possible Measles Infection

An area resident may have exposed others to measles.

A Montgomery County resident who recently traveled to Nigeria may have exposed other residents to measles, county health officials announced yesterday. Nigeria is in the midst of an ongoing measles outbreak. The infected individual is known to have visited three places during the infectious period. The Montgomery County Health Department identified the particular locations and times when it is believed that other people may have been exposed to the infected individual. They are: The Health Department said that county investigators and staff from local health care facilities have contacted people who they believe may have been exposed.
