Council Votes to Approve Health-Care District Ordinance

Despite a request from the county to delay voting on the matter, council voted to pass the ordinance 6 to 1.

After closing a public hearing on an ordinance amending zoning for the new Health-Care District at which no one from the public spoke, Norristown Municipal Council voted to pass the ordinance 6 to 1, with Councilwoman Cathy Lawrence casting the lone nay vote in last night's meeting at Norristown Municipal Hall. The ordinance is intended to give council more control over the types of business and services that would seek to locate in the proposed Health-Care District surrounding Montgomery Hospital once the hospital is decommissioned and services are moved to the new Einstein Health Care System hospital being constructed in East Norriton. Council Continues Hearing on Health-Care District Tonight

The public hearing on the new Health-Care District was continued so council could clarify several points in ordinance.

Norristown Municipal Council meets again tonight at 7:30pm at Norristown Municipal Hall and the top item on the agenda is the continuation of the public hearing for the new Health-Care District planned for the neighborhood around Montgomery Hospital. The hospital is set to close once the new Einstein Healthcare System Hospital being constructed in East Norriton is operational. Many of Montgomery Hospital's operations and employees will move to the new hospital. The proposed Health-Care District ordinance will restrict zoning around Montgomery Hospital to prevent substance abuse and new social services as well as check-cashing, take-out beer and adult entertainment establishments from coming to the area. Council to Discuss Marshall St. Parking and New 'Health-Care District' Tonight

Residents, business owners and social service providers are expected to turn out for tonight's Municipal Council meeting to make their voices heard.

Norristown Municipal Council meets tonight at 7:30pm at Norristown Municipal Hall and while there are many items on the agenda, there are two that have some residents, business owners and members of the social service industry concerned – parking meters on Marshall Street and the rezoning of the "Health-Care District." Council approved adding parking meters to the business district on West Marshall Street earlier this year, but some business owners objected to the plan and collected signatures on a petition to try and get the approval recinded. The issue is listed on tonight's meeting agenda as a topic of discussion and those opposing the plan are expected to attend to speak out on the issue.
