County Schedules Controlled Deer Hunt for Norristown Farm Park on Jan. 23

The Norristown Farm Park will be closed to the general public, as well as all other passive recreational activities, on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

According to a release from Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Division of Parks and Heritage Services will conduct a one-day, controlled, antlerless deer hunt at the Norristown Farm Park on Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please note that the Farm Park will be closed to the general public, as well as all other passive recreational activities, on the day of the hunt.  As in the past, hunters participating in this year’s hunt will be required to use a 12-gauge shotgun containing slug ammunition only, (no buckshot). Additionally, all hunters will be required to hunt from a self-provided, self-climbing tree stand with functioning safety harness. Valley Forge Park Hunt Culls over 300 Deer

The planned hunt netted over six tons of deer meat, but there is still a long way to go to reach the desired numbers.

A team of marksmen armed with special non-lead ammunition and working under tightly controlled conditions shot and killed 377 white tailed deer in Valley Forge National Historical Park over a four month span. The deer reduction program ran from November 2011 through March of this yeat and will be repeated next winter and on until the deer population is reduced to 31-35 deer per square miles (approximately 165-185 deer). Back in 2009 the deer population density was much higher.  According to the Park's website, "the estimated deer density (pre-fawning) after the second year of operations is 71 deer per square mile (374 deer). This represents a significant population reduction from the estimated 241 deer per square mile (1,277 deer) present …
