West Norriton Commissioners to Discuss YMCA Tonight

Tonight's West Norriton Commissioners' meeting has been moved to the Jeffersonville Golf Club to accommodate the expected crowd.

The West Norriton Commissioners will be taking up the topic of the proposed YMCA facility at the Markley Farm Tract at tonight's 7 p.m. commissioners meeting, but due to the expected crowd, the venue has been changed to the Jeffersonville Golf Club. Resident's are still sharply divided on the $19 million, 85,000-square-foot facility the YMCA is planning to build on the site of the former Markley Farms Swim & Tennis Club, for which the YMCA has an agreement of sale for $3 million. Supporters say the new facility will bring much-needed recreational opportunities to the area, while detractors oppose the project saying it will bring excessive traffic and additional costs to the township. The commissioners are involved because the YMCA is …

West Norriton Residents Still Sharply Divided On Plans For YMCA

Public discussion was expected to resume tonight, but the YMCA was not put on the agenda for the board of commissioners meeting.

The issue of the Freedom Valley YMCA's plan to build an 85,000-square-foot facility on the Markley Farms Tract was expected to once again be the topic of discussion at tonight's West Norriton Township meeting, but officials from the YMCA say that they weren't able to make it on to the agenda for the March board of commissioners' meetings. They are hoping to make it onto the agenda in April. While they may not be an official topic of discussion for the agenda, YMCA officials are urging residents to attend tonight's meeting to speak out on behalf of the proposed facility and to counter what they say is misinformation that many who oppose the facility are hearing. To set the record straight, the YMCA has released a "Frequently Asked Questions…

I am against the re-zoning for the Y. We already have a township park with walking trails right across from this site which are open to everyone. People who say we need what the Y is offering obviously must not live here. There are many places in the township for youth and family activities including multiple parks and fields. All of the programs the Y wants to bring to West Norriton are already …   more ›

Public Meetings on Proposed West Norriton YMCA Resume Next Week

West Norriton residents and officials will meet again twice over the next to weeks to discuss the highly contentious YMCA planned for the Markley Farms tract.

The new YMCA facility proposed for the Markley Farms tract in West Norriton is once again up for public discussion in two meetings – on Tuesday, Feb. 7 and Tuesday, Feb. 14. Both meetings are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Jeffersonville Golf Club. As previously reported here on Norristown Patch and in The Times Herald, the planned multimillion dollar facility is highly anticipated by some in the area, but bitterly opposed by some West Norriton residents – especially those close to the Markley Farms tract. "We don't want our property encroached on," said one West Norriton resident at a previous public forum about the proposed facility. "We don't want it open for public access. I don't want to have to worry about someone walking across my …
