Senior Health: 'A Matter of Balance'

Find out about falls – dangerous, predictable and preventable.

Falls are a major cause death for older adults and the leading cause of injury. Falls in older adults are common, dangerous, predictable and preventable so consider taking "A Matter of Balance," an eight-week, two-hour-a-day course at the Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County (Montco SAAC).  Classes help participants to: "A Matter of Balance" is a structured group intervention, which uses a variety of activities to address physical, social, and cognitive factors affecting fear of falling and to learn fall prevention strategies. Although Tai Chi was developed for self-defense, it has changed over the years into a graceful form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions. Often described as meditation in motion, Tai Chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. As the practice focuses on movement and posture it helps increase and maintain balance and coordination. Tai Chi is low impact and puts little stress on muscles and joints, so it is safe for a variety of ages and fitness levels. Outrun Senior Hunger at the Third Annual Wayne McKallip 5K Run & 3K Walk

The run/walk to benefit Meals on Wheels takes place this Saturday at Montgomery County Community College.

Help support homebound seniors this Saturday, April 13 in the Third Annual Wayne McKallip 5K Run and 3K Walk to benefit the Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County's (Montco SAAC) Meals On Wheels programs. The event will take place on the campus of Montgomery County Community College, 240 DeKalb Pike in Blue Bell.  Your support matters to Meals On Wheels recipients and the hundreds of volunteers dedicated to "Outrunning Senior Hunger One Meal At A Time." Local Residents March to End Hunger

3k Walk/5k Run to support Meals On Wheels scheduled for Saturday, April 13 at Montgomery County Community College.

On Saturday, April 13, Montco-area residents will gather for the 3rd Annual Wayne McKallip 3k Walk and 5k Run on the main campus of Montgomery County Community College. The fundraiser, hosted by the Senior Adult Activity Center of Montgomery County (Montco SAAC), seeks to help Meals On Wheels "Outrun Senior Hunger One Meal at a Time." Tickets for the event are $20 before March 30 and $25 after. Registration is from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and the race kicks off at 9 a.m. You can dowload a registration form in the PDF section. Meals on Wheels Needs Drivers

Montco SAAC in Norristown needs additional drivers to deliver Meals to elderly shut-ins.

The Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County (Montco SAAC) is looking for active adults and young adults to deliver meals to homebound seniors in the Norristown area week days beginning about 10:15 a.m. Volunteers are needed to drive and partner with drivers Monday thru Friday. This enormous volunteer effort begins at 8:30 a.m., when the first batch of frozen meals is put in large convection ovens. Members of Montco SAAC then pack bag lunches also containing the beverages, dessert and rolls to go with the hot dinner. By 10:15 a.m., the cold meals are packed in coolers and the hot meals in hot packs awaiting the volunteer drivers. 'Passport to Paradise' Fundraiser Booking Reservations Now

Montco SAAC's 'Passport to Paradise' will be an enjoyable evening featuring great food, a dance band and silent auction.

The Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County (Montco SAAC), will be hosting its annual fund raiser Saturday, May 4 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Empress Room, 1489 DeKalb Pike in Blue Bell. Tickets are $60 per person or $110 per couple. This year’s theme, "Passport to Paradise," will include a fabulous fun-filled evening, a delicious meal supplied by Paravati Caterers, and dancing to the incredible music of Second Vision, an eight-piece band that kept all the attendees on the dance floor last year! There will be a silent auction, offering, among other great items, a week’s stay at a gorgeous private villa on the Mexican Riviera! Tai Chi Continues at Timberlake Apartments

Research shows Tai Chi is an effective therapy.

Tai Chi is a form of exercise that guides the body through gentle, flowing poses. Research is showing that Tai Chi may be an effective therapy for improving a person’s ability to walk, move steadily and balance. It may also reduce the chances of a fall. [Web MD] The Timberlake Tai Chi class is held in the beautiful community room. The calming voice of instructor Peter Judd and the relaxing music inspire a peaceful unhurried atmosphere.  It is theorized that the focus on the body’s movements is what produces the beneficial effects. Montco SAAC presents Healthy Steps at Timberlake

Falls are dangerous for older adults. Learn how to avoid them with Healthy Steps!

The goal of the Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County (Montco SAAC) is to keep older adults on their feet and out of the hospital with its Healthy Steps Program. The seminar, held in the Timberlake Apartment Community Room, will take place on Feb. 28, 2013 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. During the morning session, Healthy Steps focuses on preventing falls, looking at common factors that contribute to home mishaps, such as irregular eating, medication side effects, and home hazards. The afternoon focuses on the individual, evaluating physical skills, strength training and foot care. The program wraps up with a take home action plan. Montco SAAC Creates Holiday Ornaments for the State Capitol Tree

Natural ornaments were made by SAAC members to contribute to the State Capitol tree.

Every year senior center participants throughout Pennsylvania are asked to create and donate ornaments for the Capitol tree located in the Main Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg, Pa. The tree is located in the rotunda from Dec. 4 throught the holiday season.

Montco SAAC hosts a Luncheon to Honor Family Caregivers

Adult Day Service staff and members honor family caregivers for National Family Caregivers Week.

Montco SAAC Adult Day Services hosted a special luncheon to honor family caregivers of its members last week. The number of families caring for older relatives is on the increase and more attention and appreciation is due to these special people. The Adult Day Service program is designed for adults who can no longer stay alone due to health issues. They can come to the center for recreation and socialization leaving caregivers free to work or perform other tasks.
