The historic cemetery, which was established in 1847, is open to the public as a place of history, beauty and tranquility all year round.
As listed in the Norristown Patch directory, Montgomery Cemetery is a historic formal garden-type cemetery that has been in existence for over 150 years. The Historical Society of Montgomery County (HSMC) owns and maintains the site, which is no longer an active cemetery, and oversees its continuing restoration. According to the HSMC website, the long process of restoration came when HSMC took over care of the site in the 1990s, “after years of neglect, vandalism and wear had taken their toll.” The restoration effort will help return the cemetery to is former beauty and purpose, to provide a public space that honors notable past Montgomery County residents. Among those interned in the cemetery are several Civil War generals, including the …

On Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m., the Historical Society of Montgomery County will be rivisiting the story of one of the greatest railroad tragedies to befall our region – the Exeter Train Wreck. On May 12, 1899, after spending the day in Harrisburg for the dedication of a statue to Montgomery County’s native son, General John F. Hartranft, the weary travelers from Montgomery County were eager to return home. They boarded two trains bound for Norristown. Suddenly at a point in Exeter, Berks County, the lull of the rail was broken by the wrenching of the train from its track and the piercing sound of twisted metal, as one train slammed into another. Twenty-nine people were killed, many of them Norristown natives who are buried in Montgomery …

Local Boy Scouts will retire tattered American flags during an evening ceremony at Montgomery Cemetery
Several local Boy Scout Troops are asking residents and businesses to drop off their damaged American flags at Montgomery Cemetery on Saturday, where they can be formally retired during an evening ceremony which disposes of the stars and stripes in a dignified fashion. "It's quite an honor for the scouts to be able to retire the flags," said Eileen Santori, who has been organizing the retirement ceremony for 10 years. "Last year we retired close to 2,000 flags." Prior to the ceremony, members of Troop 752, from Norristown, Troop 50, from Schwenksville, and Troop 100, from Philadelphia, will spend the day cleaning the cemetery and collecting flags from residents, businesses and grave stones. Afterwards, they'll properly dispose of the flags…

Here are five things to know about Norristown and life today.
1. Irene may be on her way, but she's not here yet. Squeeze in one last camping trip of summer at the Elmwood Park Zoo with its “Zoo Snooze” event. Munch on some good eats, hang out with the animals, and sleep out under the stars. 2. Tomorrow, you may still be able to fit in a good time at the fifth annual Brown Brothers Block Party on the 700 block of Chain Street. There will be a moon bounce, free food, great music and awesome company to keep, so, though we may be playing plans by ear, try not to miss this great community event. 3. If you are out and about tomorrow morning, you should also make it over to the Historic Montgomery Cemetery sometime between 9 a.m. and noon for a guided tour. Learn about the history of war generals, and hear…
