Norristown joined the national debate over marriage equality during the public comment section of Tuesday's council meeting.
It's not often that council chambers in Norristown Municipal Hall plays host to a national-level debate, but that was the case Tuesday evening as commenters took to the microphone to discuss marriage equality. The issue isn't a matter for Norristown Municipal Council (marriage is a state issue and the municipality cannot adopt any ordinance addressing it), but it was raised when longtime community activist and Town Watch coordinator Doris Smith Starks addressed it in her public comments. At issue was a statement by Councilwoman Mary DeSouza that was circulated by some residents via social media and email. Burke will serve as an interim at-large council member until the seat is filled in the November election.
Cyril "Cy" Burke Jr. was sworn in Tuesday night by Judge Francis Lawrence as Norristown Municipal Council's newest at-large council member. The position is temporary, with Burke holding the seat until a new council member is elected in November. He was appointed to the seat at special council meeting on Friday, May 3. "I feel for the short period of time that I'm going to be [here], hopefully I can do some good work," said Burke of his appointment. Councilwoman Linda Christian has scheduled the next Third District town meeting for Thursday, may 9 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library at 1001 Powell Street. The meeting will feature updates on: Norristown's Third District includes the neighborhoods between Harding Boulevard to Arch Street and Jacoby Street to Johnson Highway, but all Norristown residents are invited to attend the meeting. Burke will fill the seat left open when former Councilman Dwayne Royster stepped down in April.
Norristown Municipal Council held a special meeting Friday evening at Norristown Municipal Hall and named Cyril "Cy" Burke as interim replacement for former At-Large Councilman Dwayne Royster's seat. Royster stepped down on April 5. Burke, who is retired, currently serves on the board of Norristown's Municipal Waste Authority and worked locally as a manager for the 2010 U.S. Census. Dwayne Royster stepped down from the seat on April 5 and council is charged with naming an interim replacement until the November general election.
The municipality announced the Norristown Municipal Council will hold a special meeting at 6:30 pm. on Friday, May 3 at Norristown Municipal Hall, 235 Est Airy Street, to name an interim replacement for former At-Large Councilmember Dwayne Royster, who stepped down on April 5. Council is being tight-lipped about its choice to replace Royster, but Council President Gary Simpson told Patch that council is considering several people to fill the position. Council is expected vote the interim replacement in at Friday's meeting.
