Norristown Primary Election Guide 2013

Primary Election Day is Tuesday - here is your go-to-guide on what to expect.

Democrats and Republicans from Norristown will head to the polls Tuesday between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., to select the candidates that will appear on the ballots in November. Here's the list of names which will appear on tomorrow's ballot, and some Election Day resources. Gay Marriage Debate Comes to Norristown

Norristown joined the national debate over marriage equality during the public comment section of Tuesday's council meeting.

It's not often that council chambers in Norristown Municipal Hall plays host to a national-level debate, but that was the case Tuesday evening as commenters took to the microphone to discuss marriage equality. The issue isn't a matter for Norristown Municipal Council (marriage is a state issue and the municipality cannot adopt any ordinance addressing it), but it was raised when longtime community activist and Town Watch coordinator Doris Smith Starks addressed it in her public comments. At issue was a statement by Councilwoman Mary DeSouza that was circulated by some residents via social media and email. The point is Starks has an official municipal badge and keys to the hall so through extension she should maintain the same code of ethics and abide by the Same employee rules. Desouza asked for her to loose the badge and keys. Not an unreasonable request.   more ›

Cyril 'Cy' Burke Sworn In to Norristown Municipal Council

Burke will serve as an interim at-large council member until the seat is filled in the November election.

Cyril "Cy" Burke Jr. was sworn in Tuesday night by Judge Francis Lawrence as Norristown Municipal Council's newest at-large council member. The position is temporary, with Burke holding the seat until a new council member is elected in November. He was appointed to the seat at special council meeting on Friday, May 3. "I feel for the short period of time that I'm going to be [here], hopefully I can do some good work," said Burke of his appointment. Burke and his wife Donna have lived in Norristown's West End for over six years. He's been active in the community, both at his church (All Saints Episcopal Church) and as a founding member of the West End Association. Third District Town Hall Meeting Scheduled for Thursday

Councilwoman Linda Christian is inviting residents to come hear updates on the Pennrose Project, Montgomery Hospital and the search for a new police chief and municipal manager.

Councilwoman Linda Christian has scheduled the next Third District town meeting for Thursday, may 9 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library at 1001 Powell Street.   The meeting will feature updates on: Norristown's Third District includes the neighborhoods between Harding Boulevard to Arch Street and Jacoby Street to Johnson Highway, but all Norristown residents are invited to attend the meeting.  For further information about the meeting or Third District issues, contact Councilwoman Christian at lchristian@norristown.org or call her at 610-960-2280.

Council to Swear in New Member Tuesday Night

Norristown Municipal Council voted on Friday to appoint Cy Burke to the interim at-large council seat vacated by Dwayne Royster in April.

Norristown Municipal Council meets again Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Norristown Municipal Hall, 235 East Airy Street in Norristown. Though not on the agenda, council is expected to swear in its newest member – Cyril "Cy" Burke. Burke was voted in at a special meeting Friday evening to fill the open at-large seat left vacant when Dwayne Royster stepped down in April. will hold the seat until a new at-large council member is voted in in the November 2013 election. Also on the agenda is a presentation from the high school, some residential parking matters and a motion to approve a vehicle lease with Fairmount Engine Co. #2. Cy Burke Named to Open At-Large Council Seat

Burke will fill the seat left open when former Councilman Dwayne Royster stepped down in April.

Norristown Municipal Council held a special meeting Friday evening at Norristown Municipal Hall and named Cyril "Cy" Burke as interim replacement for former At-Large Councilman Dwayne Royster's seat. Royster stepped down on April 5. Burke, who is retired, currently serves on the board of Norristown's Municipal Waste Authority and worked locally as a manager for the 2010 U.S. Census. He and his wife, Donna, lived in Norristown for six years and Burke is said to be well liked and respected in the municipality. Council to Name Interim At-Large Councilperson in Special Friday Meeting

Dwayne Royster stepped down from the seat on April 5 and council is charged with naming an interim replacement until the November general election.

The municipality announced the Norristown Municipal Council will hold a special meeting at 6:30 pm. on Friday, May 3 at Norristown Municipal Hall, 235 Est Airy Street, to name an interim replacement for former At-Large Councilmember Dwayne Royster, who stepped down on April 5. Council is being tight-lipped about its choice to replace Royster, but Council President Gary Simpson told Patch that council is considering several people to fill the position. Council is expected vote the interim replacement in at Friday's meeting. Local candidates for Norristown Municipal Council and Norristown Area School Board met with residents and voters at Theater Horizon Monday night.
