County Purchasing New Radio System

The $29.97 million upgrade will replace the aging, fault-prone current system.

Montgomery County on Thursday approved the purchase of a $29.97 million public safety radio system, paving the way for the replacement of an existing radio system that dates to 1996 and has recently been plagued by numerous failures and shortcomings. Commissioner Bruce Castor, who led the committee charged with the task of guiding the replacement process, attributed historic significance to the upgrade. "This is probably the most significant piece of legislation and the most significant decision the commissioners have made in the five years I've been a commissioner and maybe in the 28 years that I've served in county government," Castor said. Commissioner Candidates Trade Barbs on Radio Upgrade, Public Safety and Campaign Offices

The $48 million county radio upgrade proposal may be voted on as early as September.

Due to a communication re-banding mandate by the Federal Trade Commission, Montgomery County commissioners are currently deciding what needs to be done in order to comply with the new federal regulations.  One proposal being considered is a $48 million upgrade of the county's public safety radio system, though Commissioner Bruce Castor believes that expense is not necessary to bring the system into compliance. "We can put our radio system into compliance with the new federal guidelines at no cost to the county, then revisit the issue of upgrading the entire system when county finances improve," said Castor, a Republican, in a press release issued last week by his campaign.
