Three NASD Schools Identified as 'Low-Achieving' by Pa.

Whitehall Elementary joined Eisenhower and Stewart middle schools on the Department of Education's list of poor performers. Students at those schools may now be eligible to receive up to $15,000 in scholarship aid to attend a different school.

Three schools from the Norristown Area School District have once again appeared on the Pennsylvania Department of Education's list of low-achieving schools. Eisenhower Middle School, Stewart Middle School, and Whitehall Elementary School each ranked in the bottom 15% of aggregated Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) math and reading test results for the 2011-12 school year. Both Eisenhower and Stewart appeared on last year's list as well. For students living in areas served by those schools, the "low-achieving" designation could mean eligibility to take advantage of the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTCP). The program offers up to $15,000 to attend a non-public school or a public school in a district where they …

Norristown Area School District Says State Report is Wrong

The Department of Education put three Norristown schools on its list of low-performing schools. The district says the state is working with outdated and limited info.

On Wednesday, July 25, the Pennsylvania Department of Education released it's list of low-acheiving schools (schools in the bottom 15% statewide) and three local schools were on the list – Norristown Area High School, Stewart Middle School and Eisenhower Science and Technology Leadership Academy. The designation makes it possible for students living in the boundaries of those schools to take advantage of the new Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTCP) signed into law in July by Gov. Tom Corbett. The program gives low- and moderate-income students in low-achieving schools an option to apply for a scholarship to attend a participating public or private school. The low-achieving schools are determined based on student performance …

Let's face it Norristown Schools have been a failure for 2 generations. It's hard to be anywhere and meet a less knowledgeable, informed, language challenged group of people. I'd be willing to be the college graduates in Norristown is less than 30% and falling. Lets blame the test scores. These students were stupid before no child left behind. The biggest issue is that they were so dull minded …   more ›

Norristown Alum Honored With Prestigious Scholarship

Norristown High graduate Akbar Hossain was awarded a Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a highly competitive scholarship for students planning a career in public-service.

Philly.com is spreading the word about former Norristown student Akbar Hossain and his epic success story. Hossain, now a junior at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, was recently awarded a Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a prestigious award for college juniors planning a career in public service. Hossain's story is almost Dickensian – the 21-year-old and his family emigrated to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia when he was ten, two days before the 9/11 attacks. They arrived first in New York where they were swindled out of $5,000 by an unscrupulous immigration counselor. Stuck in a New Jersey motel, they met a manager at an Indian restaurant who had a family member in Norristown. The Norristown man found them an apartment, a job for …
